Kelly never had fast feet or hands or reflexes to begin with. He doesn't have big one punch KO power either. I've never been high on the guy, but he was a good loser and seems like a pretty likable guy.

If he can't make 160, then he can't make 160. Pavlik lost because he lost.

I haven't kept a tally, but we've heard "going back to the drawing board" quite a few times now. Loew's been dogging his own fighter for years in the local papers (the online ones I've read, at least) and he's still running the show. Pavlik's been having cuts reopening and serious infections for years and I can't remember if there's even been whispers of changing up the cutman yet.

Uncle Bob's got to get his **** together. All that public relations grooming, touting him as the new Great White Hope for Atlantic City, and he's been hands-off with the corner team and training camp? I don't understand it.

Great. Hermit's giving props to Martinez NOW, but he would have surely "ignored" (the gay thing to do) you if you reasonably disagreed with him beforehand. Way to play both sides my man.

I agree. KP has learned as much as he can from Lowe. Time for the next step in trainers if he wants to resurrect his boxing career

In all honesty, I am not in any position to evaluate what Jack does or doesn't bring to the corner. I have always said that I never boxed or trained. I'm learning but still really just rely on what I do know and some overall impressions. Like watching fights back to back. My son read me a laundry list of things he thinks Kelly needs to work on.

I know Jack has been doing this for some 25 years or there abouts? My son? He trains in various martial arts and therefore studies some boxing. It doesn't sound like much until you realize he is one of the smartest people in his age group in the country. When he decides to 'know something' he studies it well. He has trained for a while and had one fight. (Those that can should do, the rest should teach... he might be a good teacher ;) ) I have little doubt that he KNOWS what he is talking about but I have NO idea that Jack doesn't know the same stuff. Put me in ring with ANY corner you choose and I'll guarantee you that it won't make one bit of difference.

One punch can change a fight and the cut Kelly got in the 9th looks nasty. When I was at AC they showed a reply that I thought implied it was a head butt. They were obviously showing something else though. It will be at least another few hours or more before I can see the entire fight.

I think someone posted that Kelly entered the ring at 178 after weighing in the day before at 159.5 lbs? 18.5 pounds 'rehydration' does not sound healthy to me, but I'm not a physician.

There seems to be a bigger problem here. Being 30 pounds over the 160 pound limit is unacceptable. Seems to me like he has a more serious problem than just a weight problem.

Yeh, doesn't sound healthy to me either. I had mixed feelings when they showed it on TV; on the one hand I was thinking "holy hell, if he hits Martinez is it gonna bulldoze him?" but on the other hand I was wondering if the fight went deep if he'd wear down. Still not an excuse, rare is the fighter that doesn't blow up in between fights but I always think thats the best way to go(it's worked for Floyd, Hopkins, and a ton of other fighters).

All in all, good responses, you get major props from me :good

    Remember, styles always makes fights.

Weight is not the issue. The issue is that KP has AWFUL footwork. I've been saying this for years, and sometimes it was laughed at and sometimes just ignored.
He does not move his feet with his power shots. He sets his stance, and throws the right hand without moving with it. When it lands, it is not a problem, the opponents face stops the shot and it hurts them. When it misses, it means the punch drags his whole body forwards, he literally has to stop and reset his stance.

It was always a counter punchers dream. Add onto that the fact that his bread and butter shots are a classic 1-2 that are telegraphed and fairly slow and what you have is a seriously flawed fighter who has positive aspects that are so strong as to see him through fights where he would struggle based on boxing technique. He has great stamina, heavy hands and a good heart. He has a good jab, but it is easy to read.

That's it. He was never this destroyer that some made him out to be, and he is vunerable in many areas. Beating up middle range fighters is one thing, being a top tier world champion is another.
Good pro, great attitude, entertaining and a deserved world champion. He has made the most of his assets to an incredible level, but he has always had massive flaws and it amazes me to see people oblivious to them for so long.

I agree with this. My biggest concern with Pavlik is not that he has to reset even if he doesn't throw. It's like he has a counter on his punches, and it resets the moment the guy steps out of range.

Pavlik got back into the fight last night because Martinez allowed him to do so, and when Sergio turned it back on it was over. The cuts obviously played a part as well, but it was clear to most of us that the better man won.

Kelly desperately needs a new trainer and probably needs to move away from Youngstown. We don't need him to become a besotted local hero. After all, there's only one Ricky Hatton.
