Seems like a lot of people say Herol Graham had a glass chin however the punch that Jackson caught him with i think would have knocked out about 80% of middleweights and his other two tko loses, as far as i can remember he wasn't actually knocked down against Brewer was he? And i haven't seen his other stopage loss so don't know the details of that one, and against Brewer and the other stoppage, he was arguabley past his best. He clearley wasn't iron chinned, but maybe saying he was glass chinned is overstating it a bit as well. Thoughts...
Graham had that reflex defence Ingle specialized in. When you got to a certain level that meant no matter how quick you were, you got caught with your head bolt upright. When that happened, you could have a Chavolesque chin and still go ever. Outside of KalambayI, when Graham's arrogance cost him, and KalambayII, where he was darn unlucky to drop the decision, Ingle's fundamentals cost him in all his other defeats, except for Brewster, when age finally caught up with The Bomber. Although not made of cement, Graham basically had a 'solid' chin, and a very good to excellent ticker...
But for a counted but unscored knockdown, and a fairly harsh point deduction Graham would have got the decision and his world title against the Bodysnatcher. Regardless of that, anyone who can go the distance with, and only drop a marginal decision against McCallum at least has to have a reasonable beard. He gooned Collins and basically took Watson apart directly after the Graham fight.
The problem was, Graham did his party trick against McCallum. And as funny as it is, you do not win boxing matches by throwing your opponent over your shoulder. Thus The Bomber did deserve the point deduction, and in a painfully close fight, the razor thin loss.
I know it's pointless but i sometimes wonder where Graham might have gone had he never had the point deducted against McCallum or if he didn't get carless against Jackson.
The irony of a simple spelling mistake in careless... As for the what ifs? If he had edged McCallum well Watson/Benn would go a couple weeks later, so the winner of that was probably a given. If he had edged past Watson, then a Kalambay rematch would of been next on the agenda. If he had got past that then you were in the Toney et al era. As for beating Jackson, then Eubank had just beat Benn, so that is a fair bet. A rematch with McCallum would probably follow if he had beaten the ego.
If i can correct people, Graham wouldn't have beat McCallum but for the point deduction, it would have been a draw.
Julian Jackson could ko a rhino, so I don't think appearing in the hawk's highlight reel means you got a china chin.
Does anyone know what other fights he got knocked down in? Seem to remember he did against Frank Grant when he looked a shell of himself.
