I thought so too, but with hindsight even an 87 Hagler would of got to him eventually particularly if the bout was over 15 rounds.
The whole "Ingle style" is a complete myth. Graham brought that style up to Sheffield with him and naturally all the younger kids started copying and patterning themselves after him. It was his style, one that he developed after years of watching Ali.
Basically it's just people copying Herol Graham's style. He trained at Brendan Ingle's gym, and then other members of Ingle's stable came through copying Graham's style. So some people say "Ingle style", but I never heard that back in the 1980s or early '90s. As for fighters, the only two worth mentioning are Herol Graham and Naseem Hamed.
he pushed mike mccallum all the way and mccallum is a member of the murderers row in that he couldn't secure a fight with hagler, hearns, leonard or duran. that should speak volumes about the bomber
Now you it mention wasn't the former british middleweight champion Brian Anderson an ingle fighter he turned pro around 1980 and he fought nothing like graham
I must confess i used to think Herol would be walking something of a tightrope in top world class at Middleweight, with his chin up in the air like that, against determined fighters who might miss punches 1 2 and 3 - but would keep coming with punches 4 5 and 6, something would be sure to land eventually, - funny i never got that feeling with Herol at Lt Middle where he remained undefeated -Herol Graham Vs Terry Norris now that would of been a head-scratcher !
Graham already fought quality middleweights before McCallum in a young Lindell Holmes, a young Sanderline Williams, Mark Kaylor, Ayub Kalule and of course Kalambay (doing better against Kalambay than McCallum did).
Lindell Holmes and Kalambay (and Julian Jackson) were also part of Murderers Row, and Kalule gave Leonard fits!
He was a horrible fight for anyone I think, so elusive. I seem to remember he would hold his hands behind his back in the gym ring and challenge anyone to hit him. (maybe that's just a legend) When he beat Kaylor it seemed so easy I thought he would go on to great things. Post Hagler there must have been opportunities for him, I guess that's just the way it goes, one of the best world champs we never had?
