I had the privilege of seeing both these fighters in their prime. Universally thought as the best British boxer not to win a world championship ( Graham ) and the best British boxer never to fight for a world championship ( Laing ). I still think this is true. Can anyone think of any other British boxers that could lay claim to these ‘accolades?’
I'm not sure he was the best never to win a world title but Pat Cowdell must have been the unluckiest in who he had to challenge for one.
My favourite fighter growing up was Howard Eastman 'the Battersea bomber'. Not quite on these guys level maybe but still a great British middleweight who is often overlooked these days. Got robbed on the Lewis-Rachman 2 undercard for the WBA title after a great win against Rob McCraken. Loved watching him on ITV and Sky back in the day. This content is protected
The Warley Wonder! That's a great shout! He'd definitely have held a belt or two these days, the incomparable Salvador Sanchez and a rampaging Azumah Nelson, no shame in losing to either
I didn’t think he got robbed against Joppy, he lost that fight as he didn’t get going, much the same when he boxed Hopkins 4 years later. Too much posturing. It was a shame as Joppy was there for the taking after getting blitzed by Tito 6 months earlier in 5 rounds. That was also the start of the crappy WBA regular title as Bhop was elevated to their ridiculous super champion status. I liked Eastman too, gave Froch great experience in the gym early in his career.
and so did Herol the nearly man Graham, he had 3 chances also. 2 of those 3 chances Jones had against Milton Mccory were close fights (draw and split decision loss in the USA) he could easily have got the decision in. Plus you have to factor in, it was a very hard time to become Welterweight world champion considering Sugar Ray Leonard, Don Curry (and Mccory) were the champs at that time.
Yes, that was my recollection of the Joppy fight too, it was there for the taking, but he just didn't do enough
I remember him dropping Joppy in the last round and the crowd booing the decision, was only a young lad at the time. The Hopkins fight was disappointing, he never really got going. Wayne Alexander was another of my favourites of that era, have memories of him knocking out "Takaloo" cold who was another fighter I followed.
It was literally the last 5 seconds he dropped him, I remember thinking if only he had been more offensive the previous 35 and a half minutes he would have taken it. Joppy wasn’t a favourite with the American fans, they thought he was dull and boring, which he was. The Trinidad beatdown was beautiful, only thing he is remembered for being honest.
It was a sickening ko by Nelson, crowd went silent and TV commentators also intake of breath, lovely uppercut highlight reel ko. Sanchez he lost on points two of the cards wide but actually got the nod on one!
