So I'm more of a General Forum poster and lurker, but I've been writing boxing articles for my university's newspaper lately and I'm trying to put together a Top 10 ATG list for an upcoming issue. I've never really tried to make one before, and I defer to your judgment, since you Classic Forum guys know more about boxing than anybody besides my grandpa, who is unfortunately internet illiterate.

    In any case:

    1. Ray Robinson
    2. Harry Greb
    3. Henry Armstrong
    4. Muhammad Ali
    5. Sam Langford
    6. Willie Pep
    7. Bob Fitzsimmons
    8. Roberto Duran
    9. Joe Louis
    10. Ray Leonard

I know I may have overrated Ali a bit, but I'd like him somewhere on the list so my readers at least recognize one name.

    Thanks for your input!

1)i don't think you overrated ali :good

2)that's a damn fine list, for anybody. i personally have no objections with any of it except for 9 and 10 but a case can be made for both.

many will likely say that ray leonard should be replaced with benny and i would put ezzard charles in place of joe louis but overall nicely done

It's not a bad list. Ali on it is okay. A bit too high for my liking. I don't have him Top10 but it's certainly reasonable. Can't see Louis and Leonard inside the Top10 though. You should consider Benny Leonard, Archie Moore, Barney Ross, Ezzard Charles and Mickey Walker instead. But it's your list.

    What are your categories?

Theres no right or wrong, just personal opinion as long as its not biased or misinformed. Looks good but I wouldnt have Joe Louis and Ray Leonard in my top ten, they're more like top twenty for me. I would have Ezzard Charles and Benny Leonard up there instead.

edit: I swear I didnt read Jorodz's post until just now, great minds think alike I guess.

Joe Louis is a good pick.
People here always object to him being high in p4p lists, despite him being the longest-reign most-defenses undisputed world champion in history ! Nevermind that he was a textbook boxer-puncher too, and beat some great fighters.

I'd consider putting Ezzard Charles, Benny Leonard, Joe Gans or Mickey Walker in there. To name but 4.
Ditch Ray Leonard, (and Duran who quit against him).

Why does it seem to be accepted that having Ali top 10 is fine, but not The Brown Bomber??? They seem to be the consensus 1-2 (and Louis is 1 on my list), and most (myself included) say there is very little seperating the 2. I was watching a show on top 10 in each division, followed by p4p (wish I could remember where) Louis was rated as the 1 hw followed by Ali, yet this same panel and group of people had ali ahead of Louis in the p4p ranking???

So if there is very little seperating them both in terms of greatness and what they actually weighed...why is Ali acceptable and Joe not????

By the way I would place both of them 8-12 on my list! Just wondering why Joe is that far behind Ali and should not be included????

I actually like this list very much... There might be a few things I would move around, but its certainly one that I can live with.

Please Boxing fans, I want pose a question...The usual choice for best fighter alltime,is between Ray Robinson and Harry Greb....Harry Greb in 300 fights at 160 pounds licked such great fighters as Tunney, Gibbons, Loughran, Dillon,Levinsky, Gunboat Smith, Big Bill Brennan etc, fighters who OUTWEIGHED Greb by 15 to 50 pounds, some many times... Ray Robinson, who I saw many times at peak, fought one light heavy in a light punching Joey Maxim, in 1952, and was not succesful...He then avoided all the BIG BOYS...Robinson wisely knew his limitations....GREB AVOIDED no one...He was fearless... Why fans, would you then choose Ray Robinson over Harry Greb?. Honestly I'm stymied...Any input to my quandry ?....

The only thing thats glaringly bad about it is Ali above Langford. I can't see how that can be justified at all, really.

Pretty good list. I might switch some of the orders, but those are basically the names you'd want somewhere in a top 10. My only complaint is that Ezzard Charles should be on there instead of Pep.
