Since you're obviously a big fan of Chacon-Limon IV, would you say that 2 and 3 are great fights too, or just 4? I've never heard of their series being one of the "classic" ones, but then again many aren't that should be.
I’d say they are yes. I think Chacon’s second fight with Edwards was better than both though (but not quite as great as Limon IV). Chacon had a lot of great fights. Lopez, Olivares I, Edwards I, Arguello come right to mind. I can’t think of many more exciting fighters.
I watched 2 and 3 very recently (well, 8 of 10 rounds for no. 3 as the first two were missing). Good to very good fights but not as classic as no. 4 obviously or as @ChrisJS says, not as good as some of the other wars between Limon, Chacon and Boza.
Erm, I'd say #2 and #3 are better than average, but #4 really is the dog's bollocks. Can't go wrong with that one. #1 is lost as far as I know, so the series is incomplete, but the other 2 are good. I don't know how much of it you've seen, but 1982 truly was a great year for boxing. Here's a list from a nutter who lived it and knows all the good stuff: Here's a FOTF with other elite level clashes from that era: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/fight-of-the-week-29-the-year-was-1982.640431/ And here's other people's takes on Chacón/Limón IV: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...header-limon-iv-boza-edwards-ii.622755/page-6 Actually, if you haven't seen Chacón/Limón, I can't imagine you've seen much more from Bobby. He really is one of the most entertaining fighters of all time. Boza-Edwards I & II Limón II, III & IV Olivares I, II & III Little Red Frias Argüello Mancini And probably some others I've not seen. Really fun to watch.
A great year for boxing, and also the year it began to die in the U.S., for the most part, due to the year ending with Mancini-Kim, Holmes-Cobb and Dokes-Weaver 1 all in a couple weeks time, and the national networks deciding to start pulling out of boxing at the beginning of 83. 1982 was a high water mark, and also the beginning of the decline stateside.
I've never seen Chacon, so I don't know, but Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, Benny Paret, and Matthew Saad Muhammad were pretty unbeatable when it came to putting on a real war.
yes, 1982 was a great year, a little deficient for heavyweights though, except for the Snipes-Berbick brawl
I’d say only Saad matches (or exceeds) him there. Danny Lopez and Ruben Olivares are right there too.
Looking at that list of fights from 1982 is crazy. I remember either watching or reading about nearly every fight listed. To think that it was just one years worth of boxing is mind boggling.
have u ever seen Basilio, Fullmer, and Paret? Paret fought just like Matt did. If you've never seen them, then watch them, and I'll check out Chacon, Lopez, and Edwards. I'm already an Olivares fan, so that requires no argument.
I was a junior in HS in 82 and man o man I watched absolutely everything that was televised that year! Awsome!
