Fighters are a product of their environment. This was a time when a fighters handlers could decide how heavy they wanted an individual to be and actually achieve it.

When Tua turned pro it would have been decided he needed to be at least as big as Tyson. So h built up to that just as Tyson probably did. As you know people have different types of metabolisms. Diets and weight gaining programs come with all sorts of consequences. Some of which result in David Tua.

When I think of Tua I am always reminded of the similar sized Orlin Norris. If you check out the weights of his career it is quite remarkable.

Orlin weighed 246 against Brian Neilson. Then in his very last fight aged 39 he weighed 196lb which was heavier than 188lb he was during previous cruiserweight days but still lighter than his debut weight of 199lb some 19 years earlier aged 20 years old. At HW Orlin often fought between 212-230.

Altogether Orlin was close to Tua when he wanted to be a heavyweight and close to Marciano when he wanted to be a cruiser. He started as a growing heavyweight then dropped to cruiser, won the title. Grew back up to HW then dropped to CW again.

But it was all natural.

Tua was 201lbs when was 19 years old by the time he was 22 he was 218lbs and still filling out. Heavyweights traditionally mature later ,by the time Tua was 25 he was 223lbs. You bring out this old chestnut of a comparison betweenTua and Norris every so often.
Norris fought under 200lbs 22 times! Several times as low as 187/188.
Tua never did!

Absurd. Tua had bigger frame than Norris and he was naturally heavier than Tyson because he had huge thick legs. So stop this nonsense. Tua in his prime was a natural 225 pounder

Norris had 70 fights so he fought above 200 many more times!

Orlin turned pro at 199lb aged 20. Grew to 227lb contender (who beat Greg Page, Renaldo snipes and Tony Tucker) all within four years as an exclusive heavyweight then aged 25 Norris dropped to 189 on a whim to become a cruiserweight.

After four years of being mostly a cruiserweight Norris again leaped from 188 to 220 to campaign as a 220-246 heavyweight. After another few years of that Orlin incredibly dropped down to cruiser in his late 30s. Amazingly Norris was 196lb for his very last fight aged 40. That’s four pounds lighter than his debut 20 years earlier. Astonishing for a 5’9” guy who was as high as 246lb.

so how come Tyson was heavier at 18?

 

Tyson weighed in the 201 pounds limit in the amateurs in 1984, if he was 17 it was only for a few months because in 1984 Tyson was 18. He did increment his weight until 214 pounds for his pro debut in 1985

Tua was heavier than Tyson prime vs prime. And he was more robust, his legs were naturally thicker and heavier .Period
