I watched this fight recently and I could not believe how much courage and bravery Hide showed in this fight. Hide, a untested fighter who picked up the WBO belt (which wasn't seen as much back then), was 23 years old, goes to Riddick Bowe's back yard for the fight. Bowe, one of the top 20 heavyweights of all time, came out on top in a thrilling trilogy with Holyfield, beat every opponent he had faced and only had the one loss to Holyfield in his entire pro career. Bowe was intimidating enough, but he also held all the advantages over Hide - more experienced, was bigger in both height and weight, the fight was in his country etc.

However, even with all of this, Hide came out and tried to take Bowe out with huge shots which had him wobbled more than once during the fight. Hide took the first two rounds by moving around and Hitting Bowe with some great shots while not getting hit himself (with the effort he put in the first 2 rounds he almost punched himself out, possibly down to a lot of nervous energy he had). In the 3rd Bowe eventually got to him and proceeded to knock him down 6 times en route to a 6th round knockout. Hide knew he was outgunned and could not possibly win the fight as he had already landed his best shots and was exhausted at that point so he stayed down and let the referee count him out. Although he was getting knocked down (sometimes the knockdowns were very suspect as well) he kept getting back up and still tried to take Bowe out and even had success at times, yet he was exhausted after the 3rd round but he still threw the punches to try and keep himself in the fight.

If Hide had a better chin and stamina I think he could have been a contender in the 90's heavyweight division - he had power, very fast hands and good movement at times, although I still think Bowe would take him out late on in the fight. Before watching this fight I didn't really like the guy, but now I have a lot of respect for him because he went into the lions den and showed the bravery I would expect from a fighter getting his big shot at the big time (unlike a certain Mr Lockett...).

He usually gets a lot of **** on boxing forums, mainly down to his awful punch resistance (also seen in his fight against Vitali), but the guy deserves some credit as well :good

Riddick bowe still says to this day herbie was one of the hardest hitters he ever went up against. Hide punched like a mule, he reminds me a little bit of david haye in his prime

Hide was a tremendous puncher, always punched well above his weight. He's one of those fighters that was both heavy handed and had serious 'pop', and by that I mean that explosive kind of handspeed. Shame his chin was pure china and he wasn't a smart fighter that could fighter 12 rounds if need be. It was always kill or be killed.

Also think it was a shame he never moved to cruiser earlier, I can understand why he did it, chasing glory and big money in the heavies, but he just wasn't durable enough. At cruiser he could have achieved something better.

I don't know what happened with the first knockdown (I think it was a ruled a slip anyway) but Herbie just seemed to collapse in Bowe's arms... maybe exhaustion.

Credit to Herbie though, he gave it his all and just wouldn't stop throwing.

    Great first round by Hide.

i always thought that herbie looked like he was trying to nut bowe there..
earlier in the round bowe shook herbie to his boots with a jab, i remember seeing that jab and just knowing it was a matter of time then before bowe florred him

I still think he can win a belt at cruiser. Certainly one of my favorite fighters.

I've rarely seen anyone look quite so bug-eyed frantic as Herbie, even before the fight started. Nervous energy was just absolutely pouring off the guy and I think that contributed just as much to his loss than the punches he was taking.

He was just exhausted within four rounds from being so keyed up.

A good two or three times he falls to the mat from little contact

Hide clearly butted Bowe in the 2nd round, which only woke Bowe up. When Hide was knocked silly in the 3rd, the back of Hide's head seemed to collide with Bowe's jaw when Bowe threw a big right & Hide ducked. Bowe instantly looked to the ref when it happened, not realizing Hide was about to collapse at his feet.

Hide's stamina was just awful along with having zero punch resistance. Great hand speed & power tho . Bowe did well to absorb some of those bombs.

Thing is.. do you rate Hide's WBO title KO wins against Michael Bentt and Tony Tucker and losses to Riddick Bowe and Vitali Klitschko higher than Haye's IBO defeat to Carl Thompson and points win over Valuev and Cruiserweight wins over Mormeck and Macca.

Hide should be in with a WBC shot soon, as Erdei is not a mandatory.

Would Hide as a Cruiserweight champion and former 2 time heavyweight champion be a good defence for Haye as WBA champion? Would it sell big in London?

The fight is on YOUTUBE right now.

I also thought Hide could be the 2nd coming of Ali as Herbie himself was modeled on the great man and was his inspiration.

Hides chin was very poor as was his stamina but, by god Hide showed some serious heart against Bowe. Herbie went toe 2 toe with Bowe in there and even the Yank commentators said it was an exiting fight.

Herbie was just too nervous and knew he was up against it but EVERYONE should watch the fight as it showed a side of Hide not many fans see, Hide mixing it with the REAL BIG boys.

Things coulda beed a LOT different though as Hide was supposed to have fought Tommy Morrison a few months earlier but the fight was cancelled at the last minute, literally.

Look up 'High Noon in Hong Kong', Bruno was also on the bill and Frank himself was being lined up as a possible opponent for Bowe.
