Hide annoyed me in this fight. Bowe even then was not the fighter who first stepped in the ring with Holyfield. But Hide was obsessed with his alleged power (that never worked at the very top level of the division). If he had lived up to the dancing part of his nickname, he may of got Bowe tired and won enough rounds on the back foot late on to edge a decision. Giving away three stone and fighting toe to toe with a more powerful, experienced man, may of been brave, but it was bloody stupid and cost Hide an excellent opportunity to prove himself for real.
Yes, HBO maintained this stance throughout the 90s, even when covering WBO title fights. Usually they didn't mention it at all, occasionally if an American was champ they'd have to and would call it a minor belt they don't recognise or something like that. I couldn't exactly say when HBO began to announce the WBO as legit. I think it might've been when Wladimir was holding it, since Wladimir was seen as the next great champ.
Good thread but Bowe was not one of the top 20 of all time. I can probably think of 20 better Heavys, his win(s) over Holy were impressive though. H2H he matches up well though. Quality inside fighter (especially uppercut) for such a big man though.
GEDDY LEE PLEASE JUST STOP. Like it or not, Bowe was one of the best heavyweights of his era, he just got fat and lazy. He had a tremendous jab, bags of heart, great chin and beat some VERY good fighters. I'd pick a prime Bowe over ANY Klitschko, no doubt.
NO sorry dont agree, i see your point of bowe being good, but got lazy , but is that not what makes a good chapion, and ATG, bowe does not, refused to fight lennox, insted threw the belt away, aprt from holyfield who are the very good or great fighters he has beaten? i can only remember, journeymen or cocaine crippled dinosours. and made 2 defences of his title, not an atg that to me
hide had a wasted career after this fight. too many duds and then bumped into klitschko. since then it's been an even bigger waste. atsch would like to have seen hide in with some of the contenders of the late 90's. byrd, tua, ruiz, kirk johnson etc.
£2.2m Hide was paid for this. Bowe and Newman had burned so many bridges by this point that the WBO was the only route open to them. This fight was a big deal at the time, don't worry about that.
Why did Bowe stick with Newman? I mean, the guy couldn't have done worse with Riddick if he tried. The first win over Holyfield was massive, he ought to have had the rematch immediately or got in with Lennox Lewis - he'd have probably lost both of those fights but could have gotten a rematch with either afterwards, rather than fighting Jesse Ferguson and Michael Dokes - spending all of his time - because there was no need to train really, in ****ing Burger King. What a waste :-( How he was still standing in the 2nd Golota fight amazes me, it's as if his chin/heart was too good, and it left him with brain damage :verysad
Indeed it was. Huge purse for a UK fighter at the time. Bowe was the former Undisputed champ coming off fights with Holyfield. Hide the undefeated and smaller, faster, new WBO champion.
