    I have it to Jones.

    Jones #20

    Hagler #35

Of course, Hagler faced the better competition. But Jones did more at the higher weights. Additionally Jones looks better on film. Jones is special as far as I can see, a phenom like Langford or Greb or peak Tyson.

It's a shame he has such a shitty resume and that shadow of doubt hangs over his chin, or you could arguably place him higher.

With all due respect to Marvelous Marvin, Jones is indeed comfortably ahead.

I voted Hagler for a simple reason:

Hagler proved he was better than ALOT of top fighters.

Jones went up in weight but the only guys he ever faced who will be in the HOF are Hopkins(when they had only had 20 fights or so) James Toney(who was only 1 weight division higher than him)

Tarver (who he lost too 2 outta 3)
and Trinidad(who was never ANYTHING to pay attention to at his weight and past his best by alot)

he moved up in weight to face the Worst possible heavyweight champion Ect Ect.

all of this needs to be taken into consideration when asking whos better P4P

    Haglers resume?Vito,Hamsho,Duran,Hearns,mugabi,Leonard.

I know P4P isnt an exact sceince and that its all up to oppinion but mine is that Jones is (and will be)slightly over-rated while Hagler is a little under-rated by alot of people.

Who did Hagler beat that would have beaten Ruiz though?

    Could Hagler have beaten Ruiz?

    Could Hagler beat Jones?

Sometimes I think people forget just how dominant Hagler was, and against top competition: power, southpaw or orthodox, 15 rounds at 100%, long reach, tons of experience with every style of fighter, adaptable. He was the embodiment of PBF and was viewed at the time as indestructible. And Hagler never 'picked' his opponents. No one had the speed of Jones Jr., but if anyone could have beaten him at MW, Hagler would have been the guy.

    Hagler for sure.
    1) Unmatched quality of opposition
    2) Truly unstoppable in the ring. Not as quick or fancy as RJJ, but devastating, efficient, and stamina to go 100% for 15 rounds anytime.
    3) He never got KTFO. His only humiliation was perhaps the loss to Leonard.

Who are these booms (in bold)?

Then I can add to Hopkins, Toney and Ruiz:

Hill, Griffin, Malinga etc. etc. etc.

    Good post.

I agree--the answer is clearly Hagler. Jones avoided too many fighters to be considered greater, and unfortunately, too much emphasis is placed on multiple-weight achievements, many of which are watered down to the point where perception supercedes reality.

Hagler was the greater fighter, and he proved this by consistently fighting the best available opposition--something Jones has never done.

Its the workman against the showman..and the workman wins this one.
Hagler could have beaten a second class heavyweight contender too, but he didn't choose to be a flashy phony self promoting egomaniac. All too willing to fight anybody anytime Hagler accomplished more in reality than Roys percieved accomlishments.
Every time Jones says he was "heavyweight champion", I have to fight off nausea.

Ruiz would have beaten every fighter that Hagler fought.

So this argument - especially the part about "watered down perception" - is well off. Jones fought the best fighter out of th two.

As to the second best fighter either one of them fought? Possibly Hopkins?
