I consider only the top 30 fighters of all-time great, so Lopez has never beaten a great fighter. But his resume is very solid and he is also the finest unbeaten fighter of all, he is a top 40 all time fighter.
"Very solid" at that stage of an alltime list is VERY solid. Something that I dont feel Ricardo's resume is at all in the scheme of things. I could think of 50, probably even a 100 fighters who have better names on their records. I could find a spot for Lopez inside a top 40 if I made one with a fairly strict criteria...If say I made one only based on in the ring dominance and skill level and from fighters I have actually seen quite a bit of film of. Then I reckon I could...I think Lopez is among the best 40 fighters Ive seen a decent amount of film of. But as for his resume....its comparatively weak. There is no getting around that
I agree with pretty much everything you said, however I guess my criteria is a little different. Maybe i just put more into Ring dominance and overall ability, however i do consider resumes also as very important. That is why i have Lopez at only 25. His opposition is not the best althought he did make a lot of defenses and many were against Former champs, but all that being said I just think he was one of the most perfect text book fighters I have ever seen, and I cant think of a whole lot of fighters who would have beat him in HTH matchup,I think he is underrated on the Classic forum.
If you're rankings are based on dominance, longevity, and performance against your class, then Lopez would rank very highly. If you're taking into account the quality of the opponent, his ranking would drop considerably. When you say his resume is very solid, are you saying that about the opposition he beat or how consistent he was in beating them? Because if it's the former, you're sadly mistaken. You're also sadly mistaken by calling him a finer fighter than Rocky Marciano, in my honest opinion. Rocky was far more proven against far better opposition, with far less to work with himself.
About even. The interesting thing about Lopez was, with the exception of the Alvarez fights, and perhaps his fight with Grigsby, he pretty much dominated everyone he ever fought. while reigning as champion. And while his competition wasn't at all great, there were some reasonably good fighters thrown into the mix. Saman Sor Jatourong, Hideyuki Ohashi, Ala Villamor, Rocky Lin, Alex "Nene" Sanchez, Kermin Guardia, Zolani Potelo and Ratanapol Sor Vorapin were all decent enough fixtures at the weight, and they were all handled rather conclusively. Really, Lopez fought everyone there was to fight at straw weight (with the possible exception of Chana Porpaoin) and really didn't falter at any point until he met Alvarez. Canizales was also an excellent fighter, but I don't think that the likes of Sergio Reyes and Billy Hardy were as good as Alvarez was at his best and the case could be made that he had just as difficult a time with them in the first fight as Lopez did with El Bufalo. and there were some other fighters at the weight that he didn't fight during his tenure as champion. Still, he did fight a number of high quality names like Junior Jones and Wilfredo Vasquez at the end of his career, and acquited himself rather well against them albeit in losing efforts, and that's what makes this a toss-up, imo.
Havent seen a lot of Canizales but Lopez skillset impressed me a lot, he`d take a lot of beating vs anyone of similar size in a H2H I feel.
I have Lopez higher. I'm a big fan of both...I can definitely see the argument for Lopez being lower. I think Matequilla said it best on page one.
The highlight video I showed you displayed Orlando at his best, and incidentally, that remains as the best Boxing Highlight on youtube in my judgment. In part II, he shows some insane countering ability. Both Lopez and Orlando's skills will never be in question, but I do think it's a little unfair on how revered Lopez has become on ESB when the likes of Bill Butcher hasn't even bloody seen a Canizales fight. Something is very wrong with that.
Bump Tough to choose. 2 of my all time favorite fighters, very aesthetically pleasing to watch, well rounded, but fought pretty dull competition. Probably Finito for me.
Both had resume's that left a lot to be desired, but I don't think there's much question in terms of who was better. Lopez was better. More talented, and more skilled, both offensively and defensively. Lopez was more dominate as well, against similar level comp. Canizales struggled against several average guys who P4P Lopez would have destroyed.
I go with Lopez , because I think he was overall a better fighter, and you are 100% correct, it's a preference.
