    Nunn/Kalambay was pretty crazy.

Thought of that, but both went into that bout as title 'claimants'.

 Yeah, wasn't kalambay officially the challenger though, he was stripped I'm pretty sure.

Nunn had a lot of first rounders for a SP

Technicality ala Hearns/Duran. Whoever won, would gain 'general recognition' as champ.

Isn't that how it goes in most 'champion vs challenger' bouts?

    Yes

But I meant (and I know you are just being pedantic; like I so often am ;)), in the sense the match was for the 'vacant generally recognized championship' going in...

Fair enough. I had always saw the bout as for Nunn's title though :!:

We can DQ it from the listing though

Unified heavyweight titles > some ****** lineal title

the lineal title is the most worthless "title" in the sport, especially since the lineage isn't linear. truly a paper title.

More linear than say the lineage of the Kings/Queens of England and now the rest of the UK...

those who are obsessed with lineage shouldn't really class Spinks as linear for 2 reasons.

    1) A true lineage (where a retired champ keeps his belt) ended with Tunney.

    2) those who say 1 v 2 starts a new lineage should discover that after Ali retired, this occurred not until Tyson v Spinks.

But Ali had come back and fought Holmes and lost, which (in the absence of an alternative 1 v 2 matchup) gave Holmes lineage.

liner is dead at heavyweight again...since lewis never lost it in the ring and retired with a win over vitali...some just give the ring title the liner title however. It also died with Tunney and Marcano. ...however..right now...Wlad due to ring is called liner, before that vitali due to ring..than lewis..beat briggs...foreman...moore...holyfield...bowe...holyfield....douglas...tyson...spinks....holmes....ali....L. spinks....ali...foreman...frazier...ali....liston...patterson...johanson....patterson....we go to marciano.....ummmm not sure who actually had liner before him.....walcott? charles, louis? anyhow, you get to louis....and beat braddock....bear, carneria, sharkey, shemling that we get to the retired tunney..dempsey...willard....johnson....jeffries....fitz...corbett..sullivan..... sound about right?
