When Gene Tunney retired as heavyweight champion the following fighters were matched in a tournament to find his sucessor: Johny Risko Jack Sharkey Young Stribling Max Schmeling The tournament waqs arranged by Tex Rickard. As with the super six a key player was left out. Rickard refused to alow George Godfrey to take part in the tournament for fear that he might win it. Godfrey therfore becomes the Lucian Bute figure. Like the super six the tournament opened with a major upset. The relativley unknown MaX Schmeling defeated Johny Risko who had been the consensus favourite to win the tournament. This could be compared to Kesslers defeat at the hands of Ward. The final round saw the recently unknown Schmeling face off against Jack Sahrkey who was now the obvious heir apparent...........
Bute's not been left out because of that, but good thread nonetheless. I've been interested in the division between Tunney & Louis for a little while now, and the forum has been rich with discussion about these fighters in the past week, and has been enjoyable.
I'm not certain that the no.1 has yet been clearly established yet and with Bute unable to fight many of the best in the division how can he remain at the top?
Agreed. Until the supersix is done it's hard to give anyone the number 1 spot. Lets see how that pans out and give Bute a shot at the winner, then it would be more clear.
