Hey folks, New to this site, and am a lifelong fan and ex-amateur boxer writing a book on legendary gym wars/sparring sessions as a hobby project. I know that in additional to people who are strictly fans, there are a lot of people on these forums who've spent years around gyms for one reason or another. I'm looking to write about: a) sparring sessions that had an influence on the pro game (beginning or end of a career, a fighter getting discovered, etc...) or b) sparring sessions that were legendary in and of themselves Does anyone have any stories to share? Particularly stories you have first hand knowledge of? Thanks a lot! Brennan Lowrie
i have accounts of some from like 30s/40s/50s. my old mate burt bienstock (fellow poster on here) is your man for this...you'll be amazed at what he saw in the 50's..and onwards..
For me, it's the Dempsey vs Greb spar story, or the Duran story where he knocked out the sparring partners dad.
Charley Burley/Elmer Ray is damn near unbelievable. Specially now that we know Ray had one of the best runs in the division from 44 until he dropped a MD to JJW in 47. Dream match Hearns/McCallum is or used to be on YT.
Years ago i watched a listón tribute called sonny liston night train and i watched 3 seconds of their sparring session and definitely foreman was 18. A kid
Rumors of a young future-to-be Tomorrow's Champion, 14 year old Tony Ayala jr. manhandling World welterweight champion Pipino Cuevas in a spar many years ago in San Antonio.
