A rare insight into the almost mythical times of boxing, courtesy of champion Tommy Ryan. This content is protected Very interesting.
Would like to know more about the man who had the vision to film these guys .. I've seen this one and a few others including James J Jeffries pop up on and off Youtube over the years , all shot in the same location in the same manner ... great footage .. they must have shot more as well .. would sure like to know ..
What also seems odd is that the footage doesn't seem to be in a finished form, repeating through multiple takes etc.
I believe that the this footage of Tommy Ryan talking about his boxing career was filmed well after 1920, possibly after 1930. Back in 1920, there weren't films with sound. In fact, the first commercially successful motion pictures with sound weren't released until the late 1920s. - Chuck Johnston
If this footage proves one thing and one thing only it's that boxers and boxing fans will always think it was better in the olden days. "12 rounds? Real champions fought for 15 rounds!" "15 rounds? Pah. Real champions fought 25 rounds... And you could only win the title by knockout!" "Pah. You think that was tough? In my time, you could only call yourself champion if you fought everyone from lightweight to heavyweight." This content is protected
