You know your stuff Dempsey but we take a different view on the long count, I've long thought Jack might have had him had he gone right to the corner and after watching today feel even more sure that Gene would have missed getting up in time.

Gene seems to get on track pretty quickly. Jack seems gassed, like he doesn't want to take the walk to the other side of the ring. He seems gassed from about round 4, a round in which Tunney puts a lot of hurt on him.

It's funny. Tunney is the classic fighter who hits at a target while Jack is the kind that punches through the target. That said, Tunney does some damage for sure, even with that weird right he throws, almost Witherspoon-esque (or vice versa).

And a developed jab sure would have helped Jack here.

Meanwhile, the referee famously DOESN'T wait for Tunney to go to the neutral corner before beginning his count over Dempsey in the eighth round.

Too bad the referee didn't act the same way when Tunney went down.

And he was warned for rabbit punching!

Hey, if the ref allowed it, he would have been a fool not to.

If the high def shows anything, it shows how gassed Dempsey was. The years off definitely took their toll. His legs just aren't there. In the past I have picked Tunney in a prime for prime match. No so certain anymore....

The first thing I noticed was that he was not the perfect chiseled athletic specimen of his prime. You can immediately tell that it's a past peak man in there.

Given how most fighters in that shape perform in the ring, it's pretty awesome that Dempsey kept coming forward, bringing the action to Tunney.

And as past his prime Dempsey was, Tunney still had to fight like he was holding onto dear life.

No, it wouldn't . You say that without knowing what you are talking about.
Dempsey, needed to catch a fast moving target. Dempsey was
an attack dog, a jab would've made him more vulnerable to right hands which he was getting hit with anyway. Dempsey's aggressive style doesnt lend itself to developing a jab. Tunney needed all the speed he could muster that's why he threw the right hand like he did.

Duh, is that a new revelation discovered by you, shamoo's
next thread will reveal that Dempsey's legs were gone and that Kearns, Rickard and Dempsey were in cahoots to defraud the poor paying public when they knew for a fact that Dempsey's legs were gone. Shamoo, will post research and articles to prove it stay tuned.

I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. I actually did box quite a bit at one time, under tutelage of some decent folks at point. Even sparred against an MMA friend a few months ago at my advanced age and remembered enough not get slaughtered.

Even Tyson, who had a hyper-aggressive style, had a good, developed jab and displayed it with great timing against guys who were much longer. Dempsey paws with his here occasionally but it's pretty pathetic. And he is still open all day for Tunney's right with that ****ed hook and lean. I don't remember a whole lot about his prep for this fight but he could have used some outside voices and a revamp in style.

At the risk of upsetting some of our more fanatical Jack Dempsey admirers, I really do hope he was a shadow of his former self in this very clear clip. Because things don't seem to bode well for him in the Dempsey / Foreman thread on this showing.

Incredible find. Thanks so much for sharing. It's obvious Jack is well past it, his legs are clumsy here not the coiled spring that sparred Bill Tate and pounced on Willard. On the other hand brilliant footwork from Tunney and Jack despite being past it keeps coming what a tough sob

Sigh! Dempsey was an old fighter, what's that saying about "you cant teach an old dog new tricks". He had about two months to train for Tunney 2, after the Sharkey. Since you were a "fighter":lol:, you should know that's too short a turn around time to be in a major fight, especially for an old guy.

Please stop showing what kind of pysstorian you are by not letting the facts get in the way of your revelations, so dumb, so very dumb.

So, you are saying that Tyson's jab was inconsequential in his ability to break down taller and/or shiftier fighters? Do come out with your astute ana lysis. The world is waiting.

No sh*t Dempsey's legs were gone but apparently so was any level of conditioning. Thank God for him those were 10 rounders he fought against Tunney. He looked like Hollywood f*cked his legs AND LUNGS right from under him. (And if you think I don't applaud that...)

I hope at your age I have something more meaningful in my life than to caw on like 53rd & 3rd service boy about total bullsh*t on the some message board. May this forum provide true meaning in your golden years.

You, sir, win have truly won at life.
