Historical question. If Kovalev beats Canelo on November 2, will he end up in the boxing hall of fame?
Here's one vote for yes, as the victory came way past his prime, and he likely deserved the win over Ward in the first fight.

Deserving a win over Ward to who retired undefeated and beating Canelo in his prime, who's a pound talent combined with a few dominating years of being the best light heavyweight in boxing = the Hall of fame. Maybe not a first-ballot guy, but I think he should get in. Thoughts?

His resume is good. It matters how he wins. If he can land clean he can knock out Canelo, I just see that hard for him. Canelo is a good counterpuncher and quick. The jab of Kovalev is the key. A lot of people think Hearns beat Duran or Cuevas because of height. It was speed. If it was so easy to stop someone anyone would win if they were taller. It takes speed and skills to knock out someone and beat them convincingly.

Most thought he did, and the scoring, especially in round 10 was terrible.

I can't remember my card, but I rewatched the first recently and scored it for Ward, I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: It was 115-112 for Ward.

I have a rule of thumb, when 66% or more of the media card say a fighter won, watch out for a robbery if he didn't! All three judges had it 114-113 for Ward. Like I said there was some fuzzy math going on in round 10, where judges gave it to Ward, when that was one of Kovalev's best rounds. Kovalev also had a 10-8 round.

61 TOTAL SCORES POLLED FROM MEDIA

    44 Scores for KOVALEV = 72%
    16 Scores for WARD = 26%
    1 Score for a DRAW = 1%

Unfortunately the judges decision is the official decision. All else is speculation.

Canelo is young, very quick and a wicked body puncher. Kovalev has the power to do the job but can’t take it to the body at all. It’s his Achilles heel.

I HAD KRUSHER WINNING THE 1ST TIME. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT I HAD HIM WINNING EVERY RD IN FT #2 AND HURTING WARD UNTIL THE LOW BLOWS STARTED PILING UP. ONCE MORE TONY (IN THE BAG LIKE WITH CORRALES) WEEKS SAVED THE BETTERS IN LAS VEGAS. PERIOD. EXCLAMATION POINT

Kov's already a HOF IMO. I mean, Gatti is in the HOF.

I sure do not think there will be a ton of potential candidates when it comes time to vote. So there will not be a wide dispersion of votes for multiple candidates. So a guy like Kovalev gets the votes in a year when competition is weak.

I had it 7-5+KD to SK in the first. And I agree that he was doing even better in the rematch until the stoppage. Kovalev may have lost the second anyway because I think he was gassing badly. But the punches to the nuts sure sealed his fate.

Only Ward fanboys could possible score the first Kovelav fight to him he only won about 2 or 3 rounds clearly.

Mendoza, didnt you just put up a post lambasting hopkins for facing a few welters?

why is the boot on the other foot for Kov, who is 2 divisions higher?

Because of how famous Canelo is, it will tip him over the edge IMO. Canelo is almost impossible to beat in Las Vegas in the post-Mayweather era though.

I was at Kovalev-Ward I and nobody thought Ward won. Even his fans who went nuts when the decision went his way couldn’t tell you straightfaced that he won. HBO also clearly instructs their guys what to say because I spoke to Roy Jones at length in a bar at the MGM afterwards and he was saying how it was a bad robbery yet on TV was running the “it was close” talk. Kovalev won clearly. I had it 117-110 and then on TV trying to give Ward rounds scored it 116-111. The re-match I don’t really count too since Kovalev seemed to be ahead and yes he got dazed but he also got finished with multiple lowblows and no chance to recover. He should have gotten 5 minutes or a DQ win.
