"Joe Calzaghe never faced the legends in their prime" 2002: Joe Calzaghe had a contract signed with Don King, having received verbal confirmation from the Hopkins camp for the fight to be signed. The very next day, Hopkins pulled out of the fight asking for double the money. Rumour has it, this is after Hopkins asked a few fighters what they thought of Calzaghe. - Completely verified. 2001: Roy Jones Jr was looking for potential fights that would make money. He asked Chris Eubank what he fought about a potential Calzaghe fight and Eubank reportedly told him "You don't want no business of Calzaghe, the risk is far greater than the reward" - Verified by Eubank. 1997. As a young inexperienced fighter, took Eubank on at short notice. Contrary to what people think, Eubank had been fighting at 175 and was already in training for another fight at the time he stepped in as a replacement. Joe beat Eubank credibly, including knocking him down in the first round with a beautiful punch. A great win. Reid, having been absolutely robbed of his title at the hands of German judges, was a fighter who deserved to be undefeated going into his bout against Calzaghe. Despite breaking his hand, Calzaghe controlled the fight and the only controversy of that fight was that Reid received a split decision. Lacy, considered the most dominant, powerful boxer in his weight class and a guy that American's considered their next great was a 4 to 1 favorite against Calzaghe, Calzaghe not only beat Lacy but beat him so bad that everyone seems to have forgotten that for a 21 fight fighter, Lacy had beaten some incredible names and was considered best olympic boxer of his year (including Taylor) Kessler, a guy that everyone said Joe must beat in order to be considered any good as a fighter, as they had already forgotten his wins against Mitchell, Mcintyre, Mkertchian, Reid, Veit, Woodhall, Sheika... Joe took the fight to Kessler, out jabbed him and beat him in a clear victory, setting himself up for further pay days. Hopkins, a guy that seems ageless was out thought by Calzaghe in a fight that was rough, dirty and right down Hopkins alley, yet he still couldn't pull it off, a fight where 85% of people polled said Calzaghe won a clear decision yet still people consider there was controversy..... the same Hopkins that went on and dominated Pavlik, the "next biggest thing" in a fight that showed Hopkins was in no shape or form done as a fighter. Jones Jr, come back by beating two top ten challengers in Hanshaw and Ajamu and did it convincingly. Also handed Tito an embarrassing lop sided loss, regardless of what you think of him and agreeing that he wasn't in his prime, this version of Jones Jr still manages to beat a good clear majority of the light heavyweights out there, he was not only beaten by Calzaghe but absolutely dominated as Calzaghe did all the things that Jones Jr was once famous for when fighting other opponents. 46-0, 32ko including 25 title fights. Held every single belt he could hold in his chosen division at 168 and then came up and dominated the 175lb Ring Champ who had dominated Tarver previously and dominated Pavlik just a few months later. Yet, Joe is a cherry picker? Give the man some credit and enjoy the career he's had, if you can't enjoy watching an exciting fight style such as that, where he's happy to go head to head with near any boxer and showboat during, then you're not boxing fans at all. Is Joe the greatest boxer ever? No. But he is an ATG and someone you can easily put up for comparison with anyone from 160-175lb. Why? Because much like other unorthodox fighters who found ways to win, Joe has shown no matter the competition, he will find a way to win. Celebrate his career rather than bagging it, then you might actually enjoy boxing for once, you lamely cynical little twits. History lesson over.
U could talk all the crap u want. Some dimwit will listen. But, the truth is and let it be heard, calzaghe would of been no match for superman in his prime. History erased and rewritten.
Calzaghe is a Warren fighter in all but his last farce of a matchup - everyone knows about the path of Warren fighters. Other boxers didn't break away from him for fun - Joe never ever did.
Calzaghe can indeed be compared to the greats. Some he would beat, some would have been able to figure him out. Whilst this version of Roy Jones was nowhere near 'Prime', there is little doubt in my mind that if you pit them together in a fantasy match in their primes at SMW (though Roy spent little time there) that Roy would still find Joe hard to deal with. With decent judges I would say it would be close. You'd have to favour Jones but Calzaghe always seems to find a way; there's no reason to think he wouldn't have done it against sterner tests and tougher opposition.
You are so ****ing stupid, this post has nothing to do with last night. Joe was already cemented long before he beat up Roy, who made a career of beating up Garbage men and bartenders.
What a strong comeback dickhead. :hey Yeah you wish you could rewrite history.:happy Calzaghe beats Roid Jones then and now.
Is that you in your avatar? You're a PBF fan and obviously an RJJ fan. Tell me what your thoughts are on PBF beating an old, past-it, once-a-year part-time boxer/part-time promotor by SPLIT DECISION :hey
I aint read this all but this is completly wrong. It was Eubank who took the fight on a few days notice. Probably whole rest of your post is as true as this part :yep
I myself questioned Calzaghe's worth for the longest. But sincerely I'm asking, what more do you guy's want this guy to do?
