I`m talking about the skilled assasin who blew out `Black Gold Schuler in the first round. Jones is lightning fast. But, given Hearns height and reach advantages. Could he snake that nuclear right hand through Jones defense? Would Jones chin hold up? Or would Jones speed and power be too much for Hearns at this weight? I can see this going both ways. The big question is did Jones always have a shaky chin? Or did it erode with age? If it was always shaky, and just well hidden by his super-natural speed and talent. I think Hearns could possibly land with devastating effect. Otherwise, I see Jones as being stronger and a bit faster.
Many people have already and will once again disagree, but i always favor Hearns( at middleweight) when this is brought up. When you take a look at every fighter that relies on speed, you also see how they are picked apart by a superior boxer with tighter technique. Mosley against Forrest, Hammed against Barrera, the master class that Hearns was putting on Leonard( before he was broken down of course) and Jones against Tarver. People say that Jones was supposedly ''shot'' when Tarver beat him, but the thing that they forget is the fact that Jones was good enough to beat him in their first fight, so he is all of a sudden shot when he gets blown away in the rematch? That was only a few months later. People always say that when their favorite fighters loses, but i actually face the truth. I'd say Jones was slightly past his prime, but not shot. With the exception of a shop worn Merqui Sosa, Jones has not taken chances against any punchers and Hearns could not only punch, but he was one of if not the best PURE boxer that i have ever seen so i see an extremely cautious Jones, a pace that would favor the superior boxer Hearns. Jabs and straight punchers are what gets speed fighters, and Hearns was accurate, fast and powerful in his arsenal. Hearns has a height and reach advantage over Jones, and Roy started at junior middleweight so that natural size differential wouldn't be that much of a problem. The only fight we have seen a prime Jones hit flush was against Lou Dell Valle, and he badly rocked Jones and dropped him. I'm not saying he had a weak chin, however i know for a fact that Hearns punches much harder than Dell Valle and is a much better fighter.:hey
I agree with a lot of what you said. In the Leonard loss, Hearns came in at 145, which is really light. Not taking away from Sugar`s victory, but it may have played a role. Regarding Forrest, I remember during post fight interview, Forrest was asked how he pulled it off. He looked right into the camera and said,` jab, jab`. He said you can take away a fighters speed game just by using a good jab. Hearns had an excellent jab, one of the best and that L O N G reach too. I always tend to favor a fluid combination puncher(with speed) rather than a speedster who just uses their speed to control the fight, play it safe and potshot. Ther is always a chance that Jones speed enables him to sneak in one good bomb(and Jones could crack at 160) But I think I lean towards Hearns coming out intent on doing damage.
It would be a great match up that could go either way. There will be a KO. I think styles favour Hearns but this is a 50-50 fight.
I suggest you go to youtube, watch the video and educate yourself. Someone uploaded the entire fight. On everyone boxing site that i go to with the biggest Jones fans, even they admit that it was a legit knock down. When you are hit flush on the chin and your legs wobble, then I'd also say it was legit. He was fortunate that it was at the end of the round. Boy...... fans are something else. I am Jones fan, but i actually face the truth and he was hurt. LOL, i guess when you say anything negative about Jones or Tyson on this forum, then you are considered a hater.:-( I don't need to watch from different angles, i seen someone get caught flush, wobble and go down.
You do need to watch from different angles, if you think it was the result of a punch, and not the result of slippery canvas. You might also want to watch some of the previous rounds where the referee stops the fight, takes a towel and for some time tries to clean up the canvas, so the fighters stop slipping on it. Even Jones' haters admit he slipped.
The only fight we've seen a prime Jones get hit flush was by Dell Valle? You've not seen many Jones fights have you?
I have not all but most of Jones fights, and seen and analyzed all of them. Tell me another fight where Jones was caught flush back then by a big puncher and I'll be convinced. He was one of the best defensive fighters of that era, and Dell Valle was the only one that managed to catch him flush and caught him when he had his guard down. Hopkins landed a few piter pat right hands, Toney swung at air, Sosa hit gloves ect. The only one that you could actually make a case for is Montell Griffin, and we all know that there was nothing behind those punches, because his main intention was to out work and out score Jones and he had success at doing it. You could even see the sweat fly off of Jones face after Dell Valle hit him, i mean how can people say that the knock down was not legit? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXJlXOQfDCo
