Ive been listening to comentry and lately i hear a lot more credit being given for punches that have not hit the target but infact been blocked, it happens more if the hometown fighter isent doing to well, they [comentaters] get a bit desperate to say something positive for the expected winner, . Have any of you noticed these fights were the comentaters do this?
Noticed this alot and the crowd seem to go wild when their home town fighter throws a flurry of shots which actually hit the gloves and the commentators give credit for the punches.
THANK GOD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE SEEING IT, started to doubt my vision, nearly gave specsavers a chance to take advantage, instead them comentaters need an appointment, or do they really?
Fighters punch arms on purpose. It is a tactic used to weaken the arms of their opponent. This work is correctly recognised by the commentators and the crowd.
Wearing yourself out hitting defences is a strange tactic to me, though i suppose if your not skillfull enough to hit the proper target, oh, before i forget! how come when the opponent does it, "ITS BEEN BLOCKED":think:good
Some fighters punch arms to damage them, make there opponent struggle to throw shots as there arms are dead due to them being damaged. Fighters hit the hips as well and the kidney if they can get away with it. The fans go wild because they think it's landed, plus general excitement and willing there man on. Commentator's will only credit it for the guy they want to win.
Marciano was known for it. But, even if its an effective long term tactic in a fight to bring an opponents arms down, it shouldn't score points along the way.
I was going to mention Marciano, I can't think of any other fighters that are as well known for it. It is a genuine tactic though, but as you say they're not point scoring shots.
Would i be wrong in saying, that if all else is equal, a good defence can decide a winner, scoring for inefective hardwork is encouridging less skill, hitting the arms as a tactic to removing an opponents ability to defend/attack so be it, but a boxer who goes the distance and 3/4 of his work is of target, has lost to a boxer whos worked 1/2 as hard but been acurate. Scoring and praising a fighter for inefective punching/agression, is not the way its suposed to be, if you cant tell a blocked/ missed punch from one on target, you shoudent be judging or comentating on fights, as your saying or doing it wrong.
I seem to remember an interview with Freddie Roach saying Pacquiao would bet Mayweather 'because we'll punch him everywhere. Arms, shoulders, elbows, everything'. Or something to that effect
Donaire was doing it at the weekend in the corner. Commentators were saying how he was picking his shots but didn't land more than a couple in about 30.
There was fair bit of impressed "oohing and arring" in the RbR thread over Donaire wailing away and missing his target.
