    Julio Cesar Chavez sr.....Joe Frazier.......Ray Leonard.....Roberto Duran.....George Foreman

All these men landed shots on or below the opponents waist line in damn near every single fight they were in, and in the endless musings on this site about these fighters I have never seen one person bring that fact up against them or their greatness as fighters, but Ward lands one maybe two belly button punches on Kovalev while going in for the kill after badly hurting him and all of a sudden it's the dirtiest thing anyone has ever seen? Be objective, be honest with yourself. Ward and Kov got into a fistfight tonight and Ward showed himself to be the better fighter, it's that simple, he isn't 2-0 for no reason.

    Sure..I'll answer..

I've not said anything about ward being dirty. What I have consistently said is I feel that the last punch was on the capital "B" that was well below the belt line. The fight ended on an illegal punch. That should not ever happen.

Have they ever been awarded a knockout in a fight of this magnitude from a punch that was below the beltline?

I think that the problem for Ward, in terms of perception, is all that he does. That is, it's not just the hitting on the belt line. It's the holding, it's the head butting, etc.

Someone compared Ward with Hatton last night. I think that's a fair comparison. A lot of people just don't like that style because they think it's dirty and cheap.

Hitting on the belt line, by itself, is not necessarily dirty. At least not in my book.

Borderline? Have you actually watched the fight? The shots were on the letters that were below the waist band... A pretty wide waist band. The naval was exposed, the trunks were not pulled up over the naval. Too many people are downplaying this. Kovalev got brutalized below the waist line.

One shot is clearly below the beltline, the rest are not caught clearly from the camera Angle but appear to be legal beltline shots.

    Video footage proves you wrong.

Those shots were legal blows to the mid section. Kovalev slouching over looking for a way out from legal blows is what caused Weeks to stop matters when he went over again for the 3rd time.

Ward was in his rights to rip into Kovalev there but he didn't.

Well Roberto Duran won his lightweight title by absolutely BRUTALIZING ken Buchanans poor nut sack. If you wanna see a real low blow go watch the end of that fight, or when Cotto completely turned the tide in his fight with Zab by throwing two completely intentional haymaker nut shots, or when Hatton took the soul of Kosta Tszu with an absolutely merciless nut shot. Chavez through punches like the ones Ward was throwing in every single one of his fights. Ward was going hard after Kovs body and a few of his shots may have strayed low but the video evidence only shows one that clearly does, it was not the best stoppage, he should have been ruled down and at least got a count, but he went down from a sustained focused beating to the body and being exhausted and badly hurt by that right hand , it wasn't from getting hit in his nuts.

The officiating and ruling to the end of Roberto Duran's fight with Ken Buchanan was pretty disgraceful too, if you want the truth.

Obviously Duran was still a great fighter.

Your mom thinks I'm a fool sometimes. What did I say that was wrong. Watch the gif the guy posted in this thread, you will see kov get hit by two beltline punches and hunch over like a defeated man looking for a way out.

That's a good point. I've gone back and forth on the stoppage itself. But you make the point that Weeks had already seen how Kovalev was reacting to these beltline shots and could tell he was done and needed out, I think your spot on. All of the people in outrage over the "low blows" need to be shown this clip and be honest about what they are seeing.

I thought Paulie malignagi was spot on in his commentary of the situation... He said that the ref stopping it as he did robbed Ward of the final and decisive ending it deserved.

I have no doubt in my mind ward would of at the very least gone on to a clear points win but i doubt kov survived that round no matter what happened.

also, kov was bending over into the shots very hard for ward to aim on area, maybe niave but i think ward was just trying to hit the body.

dont think the ref should of jumped in and stopped it should of been given a count at least but fight had only one winner at that point
