    Hi,

Just wonder if any of you use any types of drills such as dropping a medicine ball on your stomach etc. to condition your stomach?

If so what's the benefits on this?

If not why are you against it?

I'm researching it at the moment and would like to get a few peoples opinions.

    Thanks :)

When I was a youngster and training in the local gym, that was part of the daily routine once we got into fair conditioning. The trainer would have us lie on the mat of the ring with arms at our sides and drop the medicine ball held over his head to our abdomens. Once it hit our abdomens it would bounce up a bit and we'd catch it and toss it back up to him so he could repeat the drill.

For a little variation, we'd have to stand and he'd toss the ball into our stomachs or when slightly turned, into our sides and we'd toss the ball back so he could repeat the process.

It conditioned the body to being hit and I must say, I've never again had abs so defined as I did back then.

It's stupid. It does nothing other then damage your internal organs ....

Hilariously a local trainer once had a load of lads getting ready to fight so he suggested that it would be a good idea to get everyone to smash each other in the stomachs with medicine balls till they had to stop due to pain...

It carried on some 25 mins apparently... Two of the lads had to pull out of the fights they were so horrendously injured. Funny story.

I used to do this **** all the time when I was 17-22, even taking straight punches at times to the center of my gut with no gloves or very very small gloves.

I don't mind the medicine ball, but eventually at like 23 I started to get a lot of aches in my gut all the time, just a sickly feeling. I took shots well in sparring, but I was afraid that I was ****ing up my digestion badly.

I don't recommend it too hard, but you should be used to SOME impact in the stomach or you will never learn how to tighten it up when you need to in real fights.

I think this stuff will increase punch resistance if you do it right but could also damage you long term.

Also, this cuban trainer would bounce a freaking tire on your stomach as you lie there, but if he hit your ribs I was always scared one was going to break so I tried to avoid those drills when I could.

Why do people do **** like this? If you want defined abs do proper abwork, if you want to "get used" to being hit in the stomach, spar. You're not going to physically get used to the hits, you just learn to deal with it mentally, so...

I'm massively against this btw, just busy writing an article and wanted peoples opinions on the reasons they do this.

Has anyone got any scientific reasons to why they do this?

Story of the entire fitness industry, rather exclusively boxing. Sad really. Buuuut, if people want to ignore research and sane training methods and smash the **** out of themselves with a heavy object and then chug some stupid drink along the lines of; "ULTRARECOVERZ; Fast acting protein and dextrose formula to eliminate catabolism. Must drink within 20 minutes of exercise or say goodbye to sweet muscle gains." let them.

Because people see 'ATG' fighters do it in training montages. If I was to place a wager I would say that it's most commonly Mike Tyson montages that inspires people to do it. A lot of boxing trainers are borderline ******ed also, opting for 'old-school' methods over 'modern shite'.

After each drill we do a last 10 which involves giving your partner 10 punches to the body. Not even close to full power though and it does help you learn in how to tighten up your abs

By tighten your abs you mean tense right? Doesn't everyone know how to do this already?

All amateur fighters do but go hit the new kid with a straight to the gut and he will fold like a chair

I think that's more to do with nerves and breathing whilst sparring rather than experience of getting hit with a medicine ball though.

I dont remember word by word but Chris Eubank said "I used to do alot of condition especially for more core but nothing was better taking the real shots in sparring"

I do it sometimes, not excessive.. at a good pace where i feel comfortable with and yes it does work but not as much as the liver shots that i took
