I too remember those words by Eubank. Lots of top pros do it, as well.
It's a controversial matter, and mostly a question of taste. One can do without, but I still think there're some benefits both physically and mentally. Moderation is always needed, of course.
As to the initial question about why do people do this, or possible reasons for this practice, please also consider the 'bravado'-explanation, it's a way of training and showing 'toughness' in certain gyms or environments, in a nearly symbolic kind of way - just think of gorillas beating themselves to get tuned up or collect their courage...

You can still progress in spite of doing something that is infact detrimental or of no benefit.

I have done this myself with medcine ball work - and never considered it a bad thing - saw it as a way ofr conditioning the body to some abuse.

After reading this thread its made me ponder things a little bit. -

I can believe that ******s do it - because I have seen Enzo Calzaghe do it to his fighters down at Camp Calzaghe. - So ******s do it.

All I can say is in my defense - I have never done it to my body excessively hard at all - more quanity rather than power -thats going to damage my ribs or something.

And if I am wrong to do it and just been brainwashed by the "old school" and "camp calzaghe" - and it has gone against intelligent modern training methods................

Then all I can do is quote the Tulsia song to everyone on this thread "Forgive me for what I have done - because I am young - I am young - I'll learn from the mistakes I have done - cos I'm young I am young"

*All young upcoming boxers - should refrain from watching any Camp Calzaghe training videos - led by their ****** Slave Driver Ringleader - the Loon - Enzo Calzaghe.

I did some Muay Thai training a few years ago in Thailand at quite a high level gym and the trainer would get the kids to sit ups on the edge of the ring apron and when they came up - WHAM! - he would hit them full force on the abs with a heavy duty pad. I think it's bull**** to be honest but a lot of people seem to buy into it.

I know quite a few people do this, but no one seems to have a legit reason. I've only came across one real explanation that made little sense but still had a lot of flaws.

I'll whack a video article up in the next few days explaining it all.
