even you must admit Hobson has done Eddie over with this one- :yep Got McDonnell stripped when he was about to run off to matchroom with the belt and got his man a shot at the vacant title which he is delivering on home soil for his fighter yet again...meanwhile Eddie has been left with a belt less fighter when he thought he was going to land a ready made world champ...you couldn't make it up atsch Eddie will go on to win other battles as he gains experience in the game but he's not ready to battle with a Wiley fox like Hobson yet - sky deal or not.
Hobson has cost himself big money going head to head against Matchroom the night of the Burns fight on PPV.The fact McDonnell's previous fights were on SKY easy to forget. I honestly think it was one of the worst business decisions I have seen over here his own words cost him 'hundreds of thousands'. There is no battle to win really McDonnell gets the exposure he wants on SKY Hobson gets Hall a title shot.I have read McDonnell will have to fight his way back up the bantamweight rankings really he is still there abouts on that score.Bigger promoter with a major TV deal.For Hobson he will have to make better business calls in the future for a seasoned promoter that May night in Doncaster was a disaster.
I think Hobson knew he was going to lose money...he was prepared to invest in McDonnell to get the title shot on British soil
Hobson had worked previously with Hearn Jamie McDonnell was regularly on SKY the eliminator against Zamora was on a Matchroom card. Even if he did want to throw big money away which he did he should of at least given himself a chance to get a decent gate by having the fight on the Friday. Investing in something obviously means you hope for a return throwing 'hundreds of thousands' into a promotion with no real chance of breaking even suicide. Even with SKY TV backing not a small PPV channel the chances of making decent money investing in a bantamweight are slim to none.By losing the money he admitted he did compounds that fact.Had McDonnell of stayed with Hobson he would really struggle to make the money back he invested little or no money in that weight class sadly.
As far as Im concerned there is no better deal for a boxer at the moment than being with Hearn and SKY. Hobson is the loser here, lost his best fighter and lost loads of money in the process and is now promoting his fighters on a chanel with no exposure for his fighters.
Can't post links but Hobson complained about SKY being a closed shop he wanted sole promotional rights to the McDonnell/Ceja fight this after happily developing his fighter on Matchrooom/SKY. SKY has a budget for boxing that is spent so they would of told Hobson sort something out with them exclusive 20 dates a year for the next three years Matchroom/SKY.There was nothing else available on that platform. Not hard to figure what to do Hobson has no one to blame but himself & he went against his fighters wishes being stubborn has cost him dearly £.Good luck to Stuart Hall when he gets his opportunity but good to see Hobson has at least got the fight on Boxnation.The sums are easier to work out when TV is in place. Maybe he did learn something then?
Boxnation is a niche channel that hardcore fans will subscribe to mostly, Sky Sports will pull in some casuals on top of fans which means more widespread exposure so i agree at the minute Sky is the best option for a growing fighter. The only problem with it is the hype machine behind up and comers.
Boxing more so than any sport I suppose has pretty much always been that way. But from your username your a Utd fan?Football on SKY have one great game & the hype goes through the roof.Take the young lad who scored two quality goals the other week against Sunderland no chance of letting him develop at his own pace now.Hype it further x10 if your English.....mind you the F.A want him to be!
I think those around McDonnell screwed Hobson, however with that said Hobsons show 4 days before xmas might make sense in securing Hall a shot at a world title but commercially it doesnt make sense.
