When ever people talk about undeserving fighters in the Hall, McGuigan's name is always brought up. In fact his is usually the only name brought up. A common quote often heard is, "if McGuigan is in the Hall then (insert boxer) should also get in". I saw a similar quote to this in the thread about whether Hatton is good enough to be in the Hall. Now if the Hall of Fame was more selective about who it inducts like it should be then i personally do not think McGuigan deserves to be in there but i do like him alot. He was a tough, honest fighter and from what i have seen of him on TV and from what i have heard of people that have met him he appears to be a very nice bloke aswell so it upsets me a bit when he is used as the bench mark for undeserving HOF enterants. I know its a little sad and i should just get over it but just humour me anyway please, lol. So is McGuigan really the most undeserving man in the HOF? Can anyone name someone less deserving so that one day Barry's name will not be synonomous with the HOF's main downfall of dodgy entrant selection?
I feel the same way as you do honestly. My problem is not with the fighters they have allowed in, but rather the ones they haven't.
i have heard of people that have met him he appears to be a very nice bloke aswell so it upsets me a bit when he is used as the bench mark for undeserving HOF enterants Mate you gotta be kidding with this statement. For **** sake, it's not the International Hall Of Really Really Lovely Little Men, this is the integrity of the sport we love at stake here. Yes, he was without doubt a very accomplished fighter with a lot of heart and charisma, but 3 title defences should never be sufficient to place you in the pantheon of greats, it's an insult to those already in there and a gross injustice to those who will never get in. Micky Ward had much the same qualities- Hall Of Famer? Deserving of a place alongside Robinson, Ali, Armstrong, Leonard, Duran, Jones Jr? Absolutely not.
It's funny you bring Micky Ward up. A couple years ago there was a thread actually debating whether Micky should be in Canastota. I remember one response: "It's a no-brainer, he should be in!"
See the problem with most people evaluating McGuigan's right to be in the Hall of Fame don't really understand the situation properly . The thing is McGuigan is not in the Hall of Fame for his fighting skills alone , but what his fights actually achieved . McGuigan was able to bring together people from Nationalist and Loyalist, Catholic and Protestant to cheer him on . Mightn't seem like much to those not understanding the situation but this was during 'The Troubles' and a lot of people on opposite sides of the community were killing each other . It seemed McGuigan was the only thing which could bring people together in both Northern Ireland itself and the island as a whole . Now if you're ranking McGuigan on his accomplishment as a fighter as regard just titles and opponents(which is what many would claim fighters should only be judged on) then it is a different story and McGuigan probably shouldn't be there . But this is the Hall of Fame , McGuigan is famous for what he achieved by fighting every bit as much as the fighting itself . Hence his inclusion .
If you want to emphasize the "Fame" in Hall of Fame, then a guy like Butterbean would have more of a case for being in Canastota than someone like Mark Johnson. I don't care if McGuigan cured cancer, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a fighter, so his fighter credentials should be the factor that gets him in. With that said, McGuigan doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.
Sorry mate but i think you have miss-interpreted the intention of my post. It is not about whether or not McGuigan deserves to be in the HOF, in fact i actually stated in my original post that he doesn't deserve to be in it. I just want to know of any people in the hall who are less deserving than McGuigan. Whoever said Suliamen and Warren :rofl Anyone else have any nominations?
That is a startleing statistic which basically answers any questions as to McGuigans induction into the Hall of Fame - 3 title defences.
I like Barry Mac, but as a boxer who achieved things in the ring then no, no one is less deserving of being in the HOF. But its the Hall of FAME so maybe you can def. make a case from that perspective but going down that route then Micky Ward also has a shout. Tough call.
I can only remember that I had a spectrum 48k game called Barry McGuigan's boxing. Great game, better than Frank Brunos' boxing. Unfortunately I don't know much about McGuigan otherwise - sadly.
