Wasn't it inspired by Wepner after Sly watched his fight with Ali? Rocky wasn't inspired by Frazier anyway. And the white guy played the lead because he wrote the screenplay.
Actually, the character was based on Chuck Wepner, a white guy. Each hall of fame has a "Contributor" category which recognizes those outside the sport who have contributed greatly to the betterment of that sport. I think the Rocky series has given boxing more exposure than any other non-boxing event or series in history, so I can understand their thinking. But at first glance it threw me for a loop.
You are right but everything Rocky did like working in the meat plant, running up those stairs in Philly is what Frazier did.
If this is the case - then I no longer have an argument. Thanks for the information and lesson. I'm guessing McCain will make it in at some point too then?
What's sad is that there probably won't be a statue for Frazier in Philly for about another 10 or more years
Rocky movies has bring so much exposure to sport of boxing, that I think its more than fair to induct him
seriously, he wrote and starred in one of the most succesful movie franchises of all time, and they are about boxing, the original won best picture and is an ATG movie
I thought it was a little funny to. And I'm a huge Sly and Rocky fan. The site also mentioned his contributions with The Contendor series. I guess that was a fairly noteworthy thing he did for boxing.
He also hosted "The Contender" which is some sort of contributor, I'm sure. However, I would have preferred to see Beristain or Tszyu's name in the ESPN headline instead of Stallone's.
