What are your thoughts on this featherweight champ? There doesn't seem to be a lot of him on youtube, but what I've seen suggests a pretty fun guy to watch. Not great depth there on his resume. Any other fights out there on film?

I'd like to know more. Wasn't he the first champion from Nigeria? I'm interested in all those more obscure mid to late 50's champions..like bassey, D'Agata, Shirai, ect.,

That's him, yeah....on film, he seems really short.

You know, as many featherweights tend to be.

I have some great photos of Hogan "Kid" Bassey vs Ricado Moreno, a fight I watched live.

I uploaded a bit of Bassey.

He seems to be remembered more for 'getting lucky' against Pep nowadays, which is a real shame.

I envy you! That's one of precious few things of him on youtube, but nothing beats being there live. Hey, caught a glimpse of you on camera there while you all were waiting for the decision of your boy's fight with Howard Davis Jr......I was watching that the other day. No one in that corner looked terribly confident about the judging outcome, I have to say.

If you mean us not been confident of winning, you are right. We knew going in that if Davis was standing up at the end of the ten rounds we would not get the decision...That's why I kept telling Tony that he had to pick up the pace and go for the KO, he tried, but that a hard thing to do with an opponent that is running/moving all the time, it is what it is.

Bassey here with Dick Tiger, who also famously settled in England for the early part of his career. Bassey was very popular in England iirc in the Midlands and North-West particularly, though you don't hear much mention of him these days.

Some links here to the stuff in the SI vault on Bassey and his obituary from 1998 in the UK Independent by Bob Mee.

Bassey reminds me of Azumah Nelson when he first arrived in the States - fast, aggressive, and could crack with both hands. He was somewhat crude-ish, and this appears to have been his undoing against Davey Moore. He put together a good string of wins before running into Moore. Apparently he never fought again afterward. Like most of the post-Saddler era FWs, he's often overlooked and probably underrated today.
