It should be noted that two of the losses (the quick submission defeats to Overeem The Older and Enson Inoue) you are referring to occurred in Rings which didn't allow striking on the ground.

One of the others was pretty much a fluke; Vitor Belfort's glove sliced Couture's eyelid open.

First off, an MMA fight isn't a race. Randy's goal was to win, not break the record for quickest submission. If that was the case he wouldn't have bothered striking from the ground at all. Usually if you're going in for the quick kill it's because you're trying to neutralize a feared enemy. If you're not threatened, why hurry and risk a mistake? I think nfc90210 said it best anyway.

It's true, but it really comes down to the eyeball test.

Couture dove into submissions in a way that is common for wrestlers with little experience; left his head exposed on a takedown, got guillotined. Left one arm in one out in the guard, got armbarred.

These are pretty fixable flaws, a total lack of takedown defense or any noticeable attempt to improve it is not so easy to fix.

 

The only thing Toney could be ridiculed for was the ghastly physical shape he turned up in.

No-one with a brain expected him to do anything other than get taken down and beaten.

No serious fan, either MMA or boxing, is ridiculing James, unless it's about his extreme lack of dedication to training (and he doesn't really have a leg to stand on there).

Toney has some serious, serious balls on him for even attempting this, and he gave Couture his props afterwards.

 

Have you considered that Couture has actually won an mma fight? Is it shocking to know that the "multi skilled Couture" has done that 19 more times than Toney? I really don't know what point you are trying to make.

If you are trying to say James Toney is a better fighter, then that's already been disproved.

If you want to say that Toney is a better boxer than Couture is an mma fighter, you have a valid argument.
