Who can remember seeing this fighter? I watched him against Rubin Carter, Joey Archer and Spider Webb. He was a good one and it is a shame that he never got a title shot. He probably would have won a title belt in today's mix.

Holly Mims was a excellent fighter and held his own with the best. If you look at Mims record his loses, rematches. His loses were close or he beat the guy in a rematch. Look at the records of his opponents and a lot of his loses he did not get the benefit. He would be a Champ today. Look at some of the names on his record.

Holly Mims is another one of those fighters whos win/loss record doesn`t tell the whole story. Many of those losses happened while he was fighting in another fighters backyard, and in other fights he was forced to wear the cuffs. Mims had a cast iron jaw, was an excellent infighter with good power in both fists, and he also had a fine jab and footwork. He was also very sound defensively when he wanted to be, but since he knew he could take a good punch he often neglected it in favour of a shootout depending who he was fighting. I rewatched his fight against Joey Archer last week and he buckled the knees of the iron chinned Irishman on a few occasions in their bout which was a great action fight by the way. I`m surprised Joey stayed in the pocket with him as much as he did in their fight, but it sure made for a fun fight and there was lots of violent exchanges while they were battling it out inside. I concur with your opinion that had he been around today he would have been a titlist at some point, and he sure would have given Hopkins a much better fight then most of his opponents during his title reign and I wouldn`t be shocked in the least if he beat him either.

all of those guys dick tiger fought were murderer row guys, thats why tiger si such a legend. He beat a better list of middleweights than carlos monzon and hagler, then only reason they rank higher is cuz of less losses. If you were to judge fights strictly based on resumes, dick tiger would rank very high.

I used to stop into Rocky Castillani's old bar called coincidently "Rocky's Bar" and Rocky spoke very highly of Holly Mims. Rocky said he was the real deal and one of his toughest opponents.

Out of curiosity, who here thinks Mims had a ATG chin?

27 losses, only stopped once. And the stoppage wasn't a knockout. Check this out.

    ~ time: 0:20 | referee: Paul Cavalier ~
The 5th round was a couple of minutes old when their heads collided with such a thud that could be heard in the back row. At the bell Mims went to his corner with blood gushing from a gaping slice over his left eye. Ring Physician William Cassio examined the wound but allowed the fight to continue. Adair lost no time in the 6th in pounding across a right that started blood to dip anew down Mims' face. Referee Paul Cavalier, who had the bout even (2-2-1), lost no time and called the fight off. This was the only time in Mims's long career that he was stopped.

murderer row aside he was living in a country during civil war in one of the bloodiest wars in modern west africa's history.

i think he gets alot of respect and easily hits top 5 at 160 on most lists, also gives a great account of himself at lightheavy for a guy who is only 5'8

on the thread subject holly would be a champ at 160 or 154...a possible 2 weight world champ for mey reckoning

Holly Mims is just one more of the talented middlweights like
Spider Webb, Ralph Jones, Rory Calhoun, Gene Armstrong,
Joey Archer, George Benton and Rubin Carter.
And they had Robinson, Fullmer, Tiger and Giardello to deal with.
Then there were Laslo Papp, Florentino Fernandez, and Gomeo Brennan.
