Surf-Bat sent me an old videocassette that he received from J.J. Johnston. Johnston said a fleeting clip of Holman Williams was on it. Being a nincompoop with technology, it took me 5x as long as it would you to successfully transfer the video to a dvd and upload it to youtube. It is not Cocoa Kid in there with him and it's only 15 seconds, but there is much to see anyway. I added music which I found added a bit of elegance and suspense and did an accompanying essay to go with it. That "pick your spot" hook on seven seconds is wicked. He pulls it then lands it in the perfect spot.
Buffalo digs in to the body and finishes that combination with a lunging left hook -that misses. Williams, loose and mobile as much as he throws wicked shots, just dips and lets it sail by. This clip is proof positive that Williams was a boxer-puncher before his hands got busted up. He looks technically perfect but is aggressive.
Nice, very good punching technique and combinations although I'm not sure I like him backing up square in staight lines with low gloves.
The first time he backs up he does so off the tail of a combination and Buffalo is bent at the waist. He ain't gonna do much. Williams is loose and sees everything. The second time he backs up, he loosely skips back and you'd think that Buffalo, who's in the middle of a combination to the body would land that quick hook upstairs, but he doesn't -Williams ducks and it sails harmlessly by. Williams is loose and sees everything. The third time he backs up he pushes off of Buffalo's biceps. That prevents any offense.
Great footage. Thanks to surf and s89. Wish Williams and SRR fought, what a fight that would have been.
The clip is nice to see, though i dont think anyone should be getting ahead of themselves and starting the old "he was definitely this and sucked at that..." etc blah blah technical breakdowns.
He has just shot up 33 places in my all time list. That was until I saw him backing up in straight lines with his hands low. Down 59 places!!
Thanks so much for posting this, Springs. It would have taken me 10x as long as you! Glad everyone gets to enjoy the fleeting glimpse of this great fighter. Sorry it took me so long. Where's GPater?? He needs to weigh in on this as he has been waiting patiently longer than anyone.
