This is almost certainly true. But Sub in Holmes for Frazier earlier in the decade, and Larry would never have been chasing Rocky's record.
Well, I don't know about all that shuck and jive,...truthfully, I don't know at all about this "new and improved serious Boxed Ears"......I feel that something ominous, new and different is going on...something not altogether kosher, y'know? Kinda like a "New Coke" sort of thing, where the original was tampered with...like when the Susan B Anthony silver dollar was introduced...or when they stopped carrying the Mr. Peanut bars in the snack machine where I used to work...or like when ....well, I guess I made my point. Maybe a poll is necessary here. The old Surrealistic Boxed Ears or this new, factual, ****ytic, vanilla version.
What? Do you believe he was ACTUALLY reborn, when he came back with that born again Christian horse sh it? He was one of the most surly, bullying low life's in the game before Jimmy Young put manners on him. Fact is Holmes probably knew that, and it made him sick to see the happy, " punchin preacher " act.
Sure it may have been an act. But the sponsors and general public bought it. That's what matters. I'm sure Larry thought it was an act and that made him livid. But, that's Larry's problem not George's.
Well you obviously fell for it, hence you describing him as having a congenial personality, when nothing could be further from the truth.
I have to admit I never really thought Foreman was doing an act. I thought some of it might have been inflated a bit but I assumed he had changed since the 70's. I don't think he was that bad then but seemed to go with the menacing image. I've watched him clowning in that Toronto exhibition & I see a guy jealous of Ali & wanting to be liked. He was basically Holmes!! I did get the impression that Holmes thought he was a fake. George was able to rehabilitate his image. He became the jolly fat guy. Holmes came back & was glaring at his opponents the way he did when he was young. It just didn't play as well.
This seems pretty on the money, very nice breakdown! Nobody is perfect, but Foreman was more morose than evil, he was no DOn King psychopath. And while a salesman, no reason to think he was not sincere & had much goodwill. he worked relentlessly for the title, just knew to avoid the very best-ubless a necessary title shot-when he had lost much speed.
