While it’s true Holmes did not meet Page I think we need to examine the facts and circumstances. Page was only really viewed as a top guy worthy of Holmes title for small window. It’s not like Page was the clear cut #1 contender for 2+ years. As HE Grant says, Page blew his big chance being on the undercard of Cooney vs. Holmes, by losing a clear decision to Berbick. Holmes of course pitched a shutout ( 15-0 ) on one judges score card, beating Berbick one year prior to Berbick easily outpointing Page. Page also lost matches to Witherpsoon and Bey. This decreased demand for a fight with Holmes. Had Page won any of the above matches, perhaps a bigger purse or boxing politics would forced Holmes hand, but he didn’t! Holmes beat guys who beat Page, including Berbick, Witherspoon, and Bey. Head to head, I think Holmes would have beaten the hell out of Page because he did everything Page did, but better. Same with John Tate. Tate got stopped by Weaver and Berbick, both of whom Holmes beat. Everyone knows Holmes was the best heavyweight in the world in the late 70s through mid 80s.
Holmes threw his WBC belt in the trash rather fight fight WBC final title eliminator winner Greg Page. Page was Holmes MANDATORY after beating snipes, but Holmes chose ham and egger marvis frazier instead.
While most know that is true, some have trouble saying it without trying to degrade Holmes. Agreed. Page just wasn't talented enough to defeat Holmes. He also lacked the discipline to put himself in the best possible shape to succeed. At times Page looked better as an amateur than as a pro. I could name at least 10 heavyweight title contenders who were better and more deserving than Page was that were not selected to meet the champion.
Holmes missed out on both Page and Dokes, but only if they had fought in 1983 or 1984 would it have mattered........ By the late 80s, both Page and Dokes were getting their ass' beat or KO'd...... Holmes made a good comeback with props in the early to mid 1990s..... History will always indicate Holmes is the superior man overall...... MR.BILL
If you have ever watched Page's early fights you can tell he had serious talent and ability. Page would have his chance to upset Holmes and rock him, just like numerous insuperior fighters did. I'm not saying Page would win, but he would make it a fight.
Page was a lucky S.O.B. to even get a chance at Coetzee's WBA belt in Dec. 1984, considering he had already jerked-off in fights with "Spoon and Bey." Then a slobbish Page fought the bore of the year in 1985 with Tubbs and lost his belt there..... Come 1986, Page got parked like a Cadillac by Mark Willis...... That's about where I lose track of Page and his career..... Christ, I think even Buster Douglas beat Page too in 1986..... MR.BILL
The phrase " threw a belt in the trash " seems to have grown in popularity since Riddick Bowe literally did it in 1993. Would you say that the circumstances of Bowe discarding a title were congruent to that of Holmes?
Page is getting short changed here. He let self get fat and often fought out of shape, partly due to not having chance at real heavyweight title. One reason they never fought, and the only reason, was Don King vs Arum. King had almost every heavyweight locked up, and Bob Arum had Page. King wanted rights to future promotions of anyone who fought Holmes, Arum would not give up his rights to future promotions if Page won.
It was more important at the time, than it is in hindsight. Of course Holmes did not make the decision in hindsight, he made it at the time.
What else is the champion supposed to do if he is not fighting the #1 contender? Who is he fighting instead and why? And how about the other guy as number 1--what else is he supposed to do? Holmes fought 2 number 1 contenders his whole title reign of 7 years. Only 1 after the 79 Shavers rematch. So you could say he was stripped of a title as frequently as he fought the #1 contenders from 79 onwards. He was promoted by a guy that had the capability to make those matches fairly easy. A different promoter and that belt is surrendered long before that for not fighting #1 on the list for that duration of time.
You really know nothing about this period of boxing history. U sound foolish. We know Bummy is not a Holmes fan and intentionally highlights some facts while intentionally leaving out others to try and build a case but this is just amateur hour.
You've made far FAR worse posts than this per topic. You make some excellent posts on almost every other topic but when it comes to Holmes you draw a blank. Mendoza would be the absolute worst poster i have ever seen on a sports forum that takes himself seriously, or tries to make others. Sometimes i wonder if he's pulled a redrooster on us, but two or three levels above for cunning.
