Folks, Note, nobody really expected Holmes to dust Frazier's ass inside 1 round in 1983 like he did.... Of course Holmes was favored, but some critics felt Frazier had a chance since Holmes was thought to be slipping / fading after his close shave with Spoon... The consensus was that Frazier would likely lose, but put up a game effort and give Holmes a good workout..... That didn't happen...... MR.BILL:bbb
Not sure there was any demand for a rematch between Tim and Snipes regardless of their razor close fight. The best fights were made, a supposedly easy opponent for Holmes (in Witherspoon) in a warmup for his mandatory vs the winner of the eliminator (Page - Snipes) on the same card. Page had to do more than just beat Tillis to get a shot, and he did by beating Snipes who had in turn soundly beaten the Berbick that had just beat Page. So i don't think it was that marketable for that particular card. The timing was good as it stood. Spot on Bill. Well Cooney was white, had a story and had been leaving opponents senseless. Holmes knew that sort of money wasn't going to be on offer againt anyone when the Page fight was negotiated, probably never again.
Ahem, it this the pot calling the kettle black again? You are perhaps the most pro Greg Page poster on the forum. And mind you when I asked where you ranked Page among the best fighters in the 1980's, you said no better than 5th. So using your own opinion on the topic, Holmes did not miss out on much.
He won't answer the question because the truth will comparison his dug in positions. As I said before, I could easily name 10 challengers who deserved a title shot before Page did. So what's all the fuss about? Sometimes I feel that Holmes, who been a good citizen outside the ring. ( Still married to the same woman, and broke no major laws ) gets a raw deal from the fans for pasting an older Ali, and the infamous jock strap comment. There really aren't any hard core Greg Page fans out there on the web. In fact in most cases when Page name is mentioned is it because someone is trying to degrade Holmes. Had Holmes beaten Page instead of Witherpsoon, I think his legacy would have been a little less, because its clear Witherpsoon was the better fighter.
You've proven time and time again on ESB you have no clue whatsoever, lying, being caught out lying, then pretending you haven't. If i had a dollar for everytime McVey and co. have caught you out i'd near retire from working tomorrow. I'll say one thing for Larry, he's twice what those Klits are H2H or legacy. He's beaten better opposition too. Neither has beaten the best fighter of their generation.
Holmes stopped Spinks in 3 but only 4 fights earlier Coetzee KO'd Spinks in 1 round...I don't think anyone was shocked with Larry getting the stop over the 10-2-2 Leon
Bum, Stinks was an enigma and I saw Holmes batter Leon Stinks into submission live on TV in '81.... Stinks was already being joked about by the time he was TKO'd Holmes..... I thought Stinks would also be game, and he was in the beginning, but then he got nailed.... However, later in '83, I didn't expect Holmes to TKO Marvis Frazier inside 3 mins.... I thought Frazier would last longer, as did most critics..... MR.BILL
In the real world, Holmes fought Tyson, Holyfield, Norton, Shavers, Witherpsoon, Smith, Cooney, Weaver, Mercer, Berbick and Ali. Is this enough names for you? Also, its not Holmes fault that Foreman ran away from him when a match between the two could have been made. I would not call a fat and overrated Page, a man who came up short more often than in his biggest fights, and a man who has a losing record vs some of Holmes title opponents as " missing quite a lot. " If that equates to a lot in your world, then it must be a small one. Troll on JT...
Larry Holmes in a technical sense is like # 2 just behind Ali on my top-10 list, but a bad-ass dude / bloke like Vital Klit who I rate at # 7, can and would hold his own in any era dating back to 1887..... Holmes and V.K. are solid greats.... MR.BILL
