Was this a decision on the level of Whitaker/Chavez, or what?

    Never seen it myself.

Larry pretty much did to Neilson what he did to to Mercer, just not as decisive. It was for the IBO belt, and it was over in Denmark which explains the decision. It is arguably the 3rd time Larry deserved the decision but didn't get it.

Other times would be the second Spinks fight... The Nielsen fight...

And... what, the first Spinks fight?

How bad do you think the second Spinks decision was? What's it compare to?

How close was the first fight?

Their 2nd fight would be like giving Mercer the decision over Holmes, just not quite that bad. The first one was close, but IMO Larry should have gotten it. Spinks didn't truly "beat" Larry.

I don't necessarily think that Holmes was robbed in his first meeting with Spinks. In fact, I have to give it to Michael in all fairness. The second fight is an entirely different story though. Terrible judging. As for the Neilson fight, I never actually saw it, but apparently there are quite a few people who feel that Neilson was given a gift.

Nielsen v Holmes decision? No big deal. Danish judge scored it 115-113 Nielsen. American judsge Pete Podgorski gave it to Nielsen 116-113. When I first saw the fight I had Brian winning, later I scored the fight for Holmes by one point. Close?- Yes. Debatable? - Yes. Bad decision? - No, I have seen much worse.

Haven't seen Holmes-Nielsen, but to pipe in on the sub-discussion that's cropped up, the decision in the first Holmes-Spinks fight wasn't particularly controversial. Close, but most agreed with it.

Spinks beat him Holmes and square in their first fight. Holmes won the rematch decisively, though rediculously didn't get the verdict. I scored had Larry winning that fight against Nielson, definitely by a couple of points. :good

That's weird, I was just talking about this yesterday to a friend that's seen the fight (I never have).

I'd heard conflicting reports, some saying Holmes deserved it and others saying Nielsen.

My friend felt that Holmes should've definitely got the nod.
But he pointed out that Holmes should've lost to Mo Harris and had a tight one against Quinn Naverre that year too, so swings and roundabouts I guess...Holmes had his fair share of tight decision in favour as well as against.

I've always felt the same way about Holmes vs Spinks.
First fight was close but I always felt Spinks deserved the nod. Second fight, no way.

Brian took it easy the last couple of rounds, had he kept pressuring Holmes there would be no discussion....
However he won fair and square.

I thought Nielsen was 48-0 going into that fight, looking to tie Marciano's record?

Nielsen was beating Ryan pretty easily but lost to fight due to becoming massively dehydrated. He got worse as the fight went on until finally had to retire for the loss.

I believe it was Pepe Correa in Nielsen's corner for that fight. Another balls-up for his record.
