This is kind of a throwaway thread I'm starting on a whim, and I'm sure this has been discussed before... but if so I've never seen it.

So then how hard do you think Holmes hit? I'd say somewhat harder than Ali, but nowhere near as hard as Foreman, Lyle, Shavers...
Maybe about on par with Norton?

(Incidentally Foreman once said Ali and Holyfield hit about the same, which may not be as far-fetched as it might sound to some.)

Nothing wrong with discussing an old question, it can always be answered or approached from a new angle.

I think Ken might have had a bit more of a punch than Larry... Did Holmes ever blow a highly touted prospect like Bobick out in one round? Ken really tended to load up on overhand rights as well, you rarely saw Holmes commit to his shots like Norton would.

Well, this example may be a bit (or more than a bit) strained, but he took out Marvis in one round, something Bonecrusher Smith not only couldn't do but in fact lost to him. (Of course there must have been other factors at play...)

Bonecrusher had nuclear power in single shots that most intelligent fighters could navigate around. He was not particularly good at applying his power.

Larry had something more akin to stinging power, that could rattle the either power and break him down. I do remember Larry knocking down Ossie Ocassio with a jab. He must of at least have adequate power because his stoppage ratio, even into (ancient) old age is not bad.

    Yeah, excellent point about Smith.
Also, I think there's very little chance Holmes would have done as well as he did in his forties if he didn't hit at least somewhat hard. Defensive speed based fighters tend to age like milk. (But Holmes was also a superb technician and ring general.)

Holmes power came from speed and sharpness. not thudding power, but sharp.

    He had decent power

He stopped Weaver with basically one punch.

Some of his kos were against much smaller guys like Leon Spinks, who had already been short circuited by Gerrie Coetzee and Ossie Ocasio.

Holmes had good enough pop in his punches, id agree with you, probably slightly more than ali, on par with norton, but not like Lyle shavers or foreman. He was a k.o. artist and a attrition fighter with great combos, but wasn't a one hitter quiter

He had good deceptive power in his right cross plus he showed a very effective right uppercut at times.

Holmes hit harder than Ali with the right but was still a guy that took you out over time with accumulated punishment .. his jab was as good as anyone's when you factor it's speed and power w his reach .. Norton was a bigger puncher.

Norton hit a bit harder than Holmes, and so did Holyfield (I'm huge Holmes' fun, but his power was rather average)

I'd rate Holmes power as good. I think Norton hit harder and when both Holmes and Ali sat down on a right hand i don't personally think Larry hit harder.

Larry scored lots of stoppages including some over foes who hadn't previously been stopped. These were mainly due to accumulation and being a lot better fighter. He also kept on the job and had excellent stamina which combined to put plenty of pressure on guys later on in the fight.

Holmes had a piston like left jab and a decent right hand and uppercut.
His power wasn't devastating but enough to help him make 19 title
defense's against boxers , sluggers and iron chin opponents.

What makes you think he hit harder than Ali? Their common opponents say otherwise.
