Spot on, Mr. Magoo. It just KILLS me how poorly boxing has been marketed in the last 20 years. I truly believe that if boxing were marketed properly and run right it could be more popular and generate more $$$ than ever. I haven't seen Holmes-Shavers II since it aired, but yes, it was indeed a classic that we still refer to.
Boxing is in trouble only because its controlled by private business jerks and "Fly-By-Night" money whores looking to make a buck and a cent..... With no Federal Commission upholding the laws and rules and integrity of the sport, racket & business dealings, the boxing world will continue to be ran into the ground and kept away from network TV, thus, killing any chances of a rebirth..... HOWEVER! One thing that never fails in boxing to set things the right----GOOD MATCHES / FIGHTS! If the matches / fights are superb, the fans seem to come out of the woodwork to tune in or PPV...... Right now in 2010, the world of boxing is in a minor slump.... It'll pass...... MR.BILL:deal
This fight often reminds me why Larry Holmes is so great. While the fight was one sided in terms of scoring, the tenacity of Earnie Shavers coupled with his mammoth of a Right hand in his arsenal made this fight so compelling to watch. I deem it a classic. Its a fight that is better appreciated when watched live or without knowledge of the result.
ANYTIME Earnie Shavers was in the ring it was a possibility that he would take the other fighter out! Fighters facing Shavers had to summon all their skills and determination to make it out of the ring walking. Larry certainly showed all of his skills from footwork to incredible stamina as well as the ability to recover from the howitzer that caught him in the 7th. It WAS a great fight! Larry Holmes is one of the best ever to lace em up!
