Spinks may have stolen the first one in more of an event than decisive manner .. Holmes won the second fight although his legs were shot and it showed how he had regressed .. there was a lot of blowback against Larry because he was agitating and spoke his mind often in an unappealing manner ... and of course the Marciano comments didn't help .. it was close but it was Larry's fight ..
Holmes wins in both fights in my opinion. First fight by 1 point. 2nd fight by 4 points. That one was a robbery.
It's been years since I've scored those fights, scored both well over 20 years ago. I remember having Spinks as the winner in fight one and fight two being super close, can't remember who I had the nod for in fight two. I used to put all my scorecards in folders, they could be somewhere here in my house. This thread has inspired me to try and find them. I have a rather large home but they're either downstairs with my vhs boxing collection, mags and all that or upstairs in one of the vacant bedrooms, good thing is my wife doesn't mess with my junk lol, let the hunt begin.
I watched both bouts live. Spinks won the first bout as an undertrained over confident Holmes was outsped and outboxed. The second bout was solidly Holmes. He aggressively attacked Spinks nearly flooring him in one round. I remember feeling the bout was so in favor of Holmes that the decision was obvious. I was in complete shock when Spinks got the nod. Holmes did himself no favor with his comments concerning Marciano and his complete lack of humility during this time period. It was hard to like the guy and it would not surprise me that any close round was given to Spinks by at least some of the judges.
