In 1977 foreman was due to fight contender Jimmy young but young drops out so as a replacement a relatively untested guy called Larry holmes gets drafted in. How does the holmes of the actual time do against George? Is this perfect timing for Larry to make his mark or is foreman only going to lose to young in this time scale?
Please slow down with all these numerous threads Fergy, we are losing a lot of interesting stuff off the first pages with all these you keep posting mate.
BC not trying to be disrespectful as you are a good poster but what's the difference between answering a post and posting a new one. It just goes down a notch either way . Fresh new questions give members like me a reason to comeback to forum to answer posts.
Can see both sides here and thanks for the comments. As I said before bc I do have a habit of something popping in my head and putting it down. I would hate to think I was knocking some ones thread off the board and can see your point. And jup I can see your side to mate. I'll try not to hog the board but sincerely wasn't my intention. Thank s again lads
Narrow edge for Larry, who would have been 24-0 at this point, but against up-and-comer opposition ... Foreman would have been a huge jump forward, but Larry would have youth and speed in his favor. He'd never dealt with Foreman's type of power - I can see him getting caught flush at some point, but using that great jab and mobility to stay out of danger. Foreman eventually gasses and Larry takes a majority decision. Just my .02 ...
Good answer mate. Yer it would be a bit of forward step for holmes but think he would have caught George at just the right time. Holmes I think would have stayed out of harms way while pumping the jab and clinching when needed. By round 10 foreman s out of everything and takes him all his strength to see the final rounds. So I'm with u mate. Good one.
Foreman , with his 'fearsome' reputation would have been favourite. Hindsight tells us, that in the scenario you have mentioned, it would simply be Holmes rather than Young that dumps Foreman on his backside late in the fight and further dismantles Foremans aura of fear. Just wait now for a certain poster to jump on me calling me a Troll and Foreman hater.! I just think Big George is overrated, thats all. Holmes went on to be a truely great champion, he ticked just about every box. 100% Larry by wide UD or late stopage.
in 1977 Holmes was reaching the top of his game while Foreman's interest in the sport was waning. I'd give Larry a decision here.
Yes. Larry would have been just about ready for a post Zaire Foreman. Holmes by clear points verdict.
Big George revived his interest a few years later , when he ( sorry his church) ran out of money. You gotta give it to him that he reinvented himself like no other .
Holmes would have dominated with his jab and either outpointed or else KOD Foreman in the later rounds. Foreman was notorious for having stamina problems at that time during the later rounds. In fact, Ali saw it, planned for it, and took advantage of it.
