You type in all caps and in different colors and yet have the nerve to call someone a looney for posting a score card and then fair observations regarding both fighters. Are you alright man?
I don’t know about that, Mike Weaver gave Holmes hell. Cooney was competitive but Weaver had Holmes badly hurt on several occasions. Holmes was reeling before he blasted Weaver with that beautiful uppercut off the ropes. Holmes just barely squeaked by Carl Williams as well. Weaver - Cooney would’ve been fun.
You do realize this a boxing forum right? Hypotheticals and "what ifs" are going to be touched upon. Calm down before you have a coronary.
Holmes was past his best vs Williams. Maybe Weaver did a little better than Cooney. As usual the crowd was against Holmes.
For sure he was a bit long in the tooth against Williams as Spinks beat him in his next fight post Williams. The Holmes - Weaver fight is so good. I feel like it’s almost criminally underrated. Weaver almost had him.
This. People throw around the term bum too easily. Cooney didn’t live up to his potential, but he certainly wasn’t a bum, since Holmes in 1982 was still on top of his game and in excellent condition. No shame in losing a competitive fight to a prime Holmes.
Cooney was dangerous for several rounds in the first half of the fight and he made a great stand in round 10. But as other posters have noted, Holmes was just excellent at pacing himself for 15 rounds and he was extremely durable. Only Tyson put him down for good and that was 38 years old, ring rusted Holmes. The Cooney that came after the Holmes fight was a shell of what he was and in a way he got what he deserved because he tried to bypass a lot of hard working heavyweights and capitalize on his name by taking what he felt was an easy route to a big payday fight. Spinks to get to Tyson and then Foreman to get to Tyson. With little prep or fights in between. However early Cooney was a good fighter and he was frozen out of the division by King who owned the entire division. And wanted dibs on all fighters if they beat his guy. I’ll have to watch the Weaver Holmes bout again soon. I’m probably in minority but I never felt Witherspoon gave Holmes the close fight many feel he did
All that makes sense-except you forgot Williams. That seems to me his one fight that likely should have gone the other way.
Why do you think Cooney's management was so keen on getting him in vs Holmes instead of waiting another year or 2?
Not white dude 1st off , But having been in a boxing ring/ kick boxing and point fighting in front of 50-100 people I know how difficult it is. Respect is due any man. Regardless of what their race is. I'm NOT a Cooney fan. But I do recognize a very good effort when I see one. As I said right after that fight was over, and I'll say all these years later. Cooney fought a good fight. To bad he couldn't get his act together after the fight...... A sad truth is if Cooney had won the fight, and never had a succesful title defense, the same jack asses berating him now, would be calling him the greatest heavyweight that ever lived.
I've fought in front of hundreds of people before, it ain't that bad but nerves would obviously go up with a championship. Anyway, the joke was Cooney is the "great white hope" and I've also never met any Cooney fan who isn't white.
