And that JAB would have given ANY HW champ in history hell!
I don't think I overrate Larry but many seem to want to take him down a notch in the rankings.
I was 28 when he and Gerry fought. I couldn't believe the great white ("so little was done with so much potential") hope was introduced first.
I'm a frugal accountant but my bud and I bet $500 bucks apiece on Larry that night!
    My reasons?
Cooney had feasted on over the hill guys.
Larry was a solid schooled fighter and had proven himself as a champion.
Larry's (weakness) was a lazy tendency to get clocked by a big left field right hand. Cooney's right wasn't going to put a contender, let alone a champ, on ***** street.
We didn't win $500 on the fight, only about $290 because Holmes was the overwhelming fav....gee, big shocker there?
That being said, Cooney did warrant Holmes respect in the bout and, basically showed himself well. His encore after this??? Two years off? When he should have jumped right back into the ring 6-8 months later? **** on the Cooney nut huggers. He never had it under the left tit, much like Ingo.

Holmes' jab is the best ever at any weight, with only a peak Hearns comparing.....

I've seen most of the great jabbers from the past and Ali, Louis and even Foreman cannot equate to what Holmes and Hearns could snap out.... Though Ali was very close....

believe it or not, Greg Page had a great jab, despite being a lazy slob on the whole...

Norton was introduced before Holmes when they fought, too. I don't know if there is anything behind this except maybe an inexperienced announcer.

Because he called Gerry Cooney "looney" and that pissed off the promoters.

Norton was recognised as champion by the WBC when he fought Holmes but as Norton had been "awarded" the title rather than won it in the ring it was basically for a vacant title. So I imagine it was less of a disrespect than the Holmes/Cooney situation when he was announced first.

The build up to this fight was one of the biggest style over substance hype jobs ever. As I've mentioned on previous threads,Cooney's people deserved 'Assholes of the decade' awards for putting him in with Holmes at this point. What pedigree did Gerry have coming into the bout ? Wins over faded versions of Jimmy Young,Ken Norton and Ron Lyle ? All of them,Young and Norton especially, fine fighters in their day,but their time had long passed. Gerry's management should have put him in with at least three prime contenders first.

I have to agree with Holmes here: Foreman deserves no credit for beating Ali.

Cooney was rushed into this fight too soon but he him and his team were hardly gonna turn it down,Cooney got millions for it,Holmes got introduced first cause the majority wanted Cooney to win and saw him as the future champ,a bit of racism played a part..

However, a very light 221 pound Page got out-worked by a raging Berbick on the undercard of "Holmes-Cooney."
