I was watching the fight again the other day and realized that Gerry put up a courageous effort against an all time great heavyweight. When I watched the fight live I thought Cooney went down too easily in the 5 th round , but he fought on with some guts and actually took much harder punches later. I also thought his corner gave terrible advice, Victor Valle kept saying box, while I watched the fight with some knowledgeable people ,fighters, referees , who said Cooney has to jab his way in and throw bombs, he can't box with Holmes he has to KO him. Thoughts?
I've always said Cooney fought better than most give him credit for. I believe because so many hopes were on him beating Holmes , when he lost, so many of his fans turned their back on him,and refused to see the fight for what it was, a very competitive event early on.
I recall late in the fight hearing Howard Cosell screaming "Cooney is back up Holmes who is running scared!" or something to that effect. Yes, Cooney should have gone after Holmes like Fury did to Wilder, but he would have had to get past Holmes' ATG jab, which I don't think he could have done. I don't remember Cooney have that much head movement.
Really an easy fight for Larry. Cooney WAS all hype. Telegraphed everything; balance of a newborn colt, dirty low blows. If Holmes hopped on him in the 2nd, Cooney would have disappeared from history, which is what he deserves. As is, his fans hang on doing alright IN A LOSING EFFORT against Larry. Pathetic. No hero here except in the great Larry Holmes.
What a great fight. I notice that people tend to make threads or post about it whenever they rewatch it
Always thought Cooney fought a pretty good fight. He’d never beat Holmes though. He might’ve beaten another champ though. Plenty of options back then. Sadly!
He put up an admirable effort. Should have went after Mike Weaver, and again, that was a given fight. And still feel that Dokes and Page would have beaten him in that time frame, if focused. Possibly Cobb as well.
I never heard about Holmes running scared. Cooney spent most of that fight looking like a big doof. Holmes did him a HUGE favor letting him slide in the 2nd. He had him.
I don't agree when people say he wasn't good enough to beat him when a boxer looses. Cooney was plenty good enough to beat Holmes, he just didn't. Holmes a much beater boxer of course. Gerry did a very nice job in there that night. Just didn't happen for him.
Gerry Cooney put forth a galent effort that evening. I think Holmes had to dig deep in that fight. Mind you this was also after Gerry had only seen one round of ring action in almost two years
His own choice & fault. No one else. Don't use that as an excuse. Cooney was a cherry picking *****. Nothing more.
It is astounding to me that 40 yrs later people completely give Cooney a pass on career responsibilities and defend the punk. He stood for everything bad in the sport.
