Someone mentioned Kallie Knoetze was Ring rated #6 when John Tate fought him. He actually was #3 going in, in the August 1979 issue, ratings as of May 31.

Duane Bobick was not ranked by Ring going in to the Tate fight. Neither was Tate. Tate got a #10 afterward. Going into the Coetzee fight, Coetzee was ranked #2, Tate #3. Holmes #1, "title vacant."

Tate's biggest win of the 1980's? Probably over 13-1 Donnie Long. I wish he hadn't been injured and gotten that 1984 shot vs. Larry Holmes.

Going into their bouts with Cooney, Dino Denis was unranked, Jimmy Young was #12, Ron Lyle was unranked, and Ken Norton was #9 per Ring. Post-Holmes, none of Cooney's opponents were ranked (except champ Michael Spinks) by Ring. Note that between 1980 and early 1987, Ring ranked as many fighters as they saw fit, occasionally going over 20 guys, but often around 15. So that fact that Cooney's opponents were unranked doesn't just mean top-10.
