Who beat better competition between Holmes and Lewis? I rank Holmes higher but i might give the edge to Lewis here. Holmes best wins: (Aging) Norton Earnie Shavers Ray Mercer Gerry Cooney (Green) Tim Witherspoon Mike Weaver Lewis: Aging Holyfield Ruddock Morrison Tua Ray Mercer Oliver McCall
OP somehow forgot to add these to Lewis' list: Rahman Grant Tyson Briggs Tucker Akinwande Botha Vitali Klitschko Golota Lewis by a landslide. With the caveat that quite a lot of them were ageing and past their best. But imo the Klitschko win makes up for that because at that point Lewis was past his best and Vitali was coming into his prime.
Grant was never impressive to me. Briggs is another mediocre fighter. Tyson in 02 had zero left in him. However, you are right about Vitali. I should have included him.
Grant and Briggs are objectively better wins than Weaver and Shavers. Even Gerry Cooney has basically 3 good names on his ledger and the rest is a thin and short resume. LOL, really? You included a shot Weaver on Holmes' list! In actual fact a green Lewis fought him before Weaver fought Holmes, and you didn't put him on Lewis' tally. So, to be fair, Weaver ought to go on Lewis' list too. Mason and Biggs were other reasonable wins on Lewis' roster. If you're talking about competition as opposed to wins, then to be fair to Holmes you ought to include Tyson, Bonecrusher Smith and Holyfield on his list too. He did fight them even though he lost to two. Smith is a decent scalp. Now that I think about it, Renaldo Snipes was a bad boy back in the day too. But yeah, Lewis' list is way better than Holmes'. Edit: I see you said "beat". OK.
Holmes beat Weaver in 1979, didn't he? Shavers IMO is a better win than Briggs and Grant. However, Lewis does win this one.
LOL, I had a feeling that it was odd ... you are right, he fought him in '79. AND he rematched him in 2000 winning both. Shavers had the punch and the name recognition. But to my mind Grant and Briggs were much more consistent. Shavers lost to some bums, whereas you had to be somebody to beat Grant and Briggs. But, OK, whatever, I guess you could argue that.
Briggs lost in his prime to Darroll Wilson (by early and brutal KO) and 8-8 Cedrick Fields, he wasn't very good.
Lewis, he fought in a far better era than Holmes. Lewis would have beaten all the guys Holmes has beaten, i'm not so sure about the other way round.
Counterpoint: He beat Foreman (narrowly, but still) Ryan, Mercer and Liakhovich. He was not that good, but he was way above your average bum.
You could make a case for both era's been either good or bad but I'll give the edge to Lewis .But Holmes ,as someone pointed out fought on more a size wise level Field .Lewis' towers over a lot of his opposition .
Lewis was caught by tons of central punches by Vitali every other fighter on your list were nowhere near Witherspoon`s level.
