So both Holmes & Foreman challenged for the Heavyweight title at age 45. Holmes came close but lost by 1 point on 2 of the judges scorecards against McCall. Foreman of course knocked out Moorer. But what happens if the roles were reversed ? Holmes faces off against Moorer for the title ? Foreman faces off against McCall for the title ? A few interesting aspects to these match ups. Holmes did have immense trouble with a southpaw in his amateur career. But Holmes did improve leaps and bounds as a professional, although he is still a little bit of an unknown quantity against quality southpaws. But Holmes does have a very good straight right hand which is the punch you need vs a southpaw. McCall is a bit of a headcase but he's immensely durable and McCall could stand in front of Foreman and survive the 12 rounds. I do think McCall would have trouble with Foreman's jab but I think it would an interesting match up. But how do you see these fights going ?
Interesting thread. Obviously, Holmes was a greater heavyweight than Moorer but at that point in their careers, I'm taking Moorer. We simply have never seen Holmes against an elite southpaw but prime Moorer with his jab being in direct conflict with Holmes's jab, is a big advantage for Moorer. I think he wins an ugly decision against an aging Holmes. Foreman vs McCall is a tougher one to call. I don't think that version of Foreman stops the iron chinned McCall but I do think he could win this fight with his jab. I'm taking Foreman but not with a ton of confidence.
McCall spent half of his fight with Holmes making faces and looking into the crowd. A little preview of what we would see against Lewis later. If he's trying this with Foreman he might have gotten knocked out. Holmes didn't have enough in the tank in 1995 to outbox 1994 version of Moorer imo.
McCall would batter Foreman. He was a lot stronger than Stewart. Moorer would probably outwork Holmes.
Yeah I'm down with this. Moorer was boxing pretty well at this point and Holmes wouldn't have the fight turning power, and the timing on his right hand wasn't overly there by then. I think McCall might find a way to lose to Foreman, he was an odd individual. Then again he might win a close decision too, Foreman was past his comeback best by then. I just worry about McCall's mental state. People talk about against Lewis, but he had more than one strange nights in the ring. Actually he was a bit weird vs Holmes and I'm sure he shed plenty of tears that night.
I really think Moorer would win a decision of old Holmes in the early to mid 90s. Larry didn’t have the power to do to double M what Foreman did and he no longer had the speed or timing to outbox him. As for Foreman vs McCall I think it’s a tossup and a lot of it would depend on how Oliver showed up. If it’s the best version of the atomic bull then I can see him hammering out a close decision over old George. Anything less than his best, I think George pounds one out on the cards.
Foreman might take it on the jab against McCall, but I see Holmes losing to Moorer. Holmes does have the one punch to pull out a win, and I also see Moorer closing the distance against that version of Holmes, outworking him, going to the body etc.
McCall vs old Foreman 50-50 imho. Holmes ought to beat Moorer who I believe would have no end of hassles with the Holmes jab + size.
