He was a psuedo intellect who read some classical literature and history clung to that and made him out to be a philosophical genius boxer who wasn't really into the sport and just tragically good at it oh the poetic irony! The reality is he was a jealous, racist idiot who liked to fight and hurt people like the rest of them. He was not so unlike every other man of the era being a racist but you would think someone so "well" read what understand its implications.
