I think robbery is too strong a word. I thought Larry lost the first and won the second but not by such clear, overwhelming margin that no one could see it Spinks’ way.

I thought it was a very bad decision. Spins lost that one.

That depends. How would either man winning affect the ATG standing of my pet heavyweight favorites?

Pat is on the money. Tho comfortably in the minority there are enough cards for Spinks to reign in the description of "robbery". Eddie Futch said Spinks won both. UPI had it for Spinks and from memory Farhood scored it for him tho it may have been Ryan. Punch stats have it very close. Spinks has 7 or 8 cards favoring him at EOTR.

Having said that 42 out of 46 writers scored it for Holmes. Even if you conclude there's a bit of nostalgia in there for a beaten champ it's still a big number. So not quite a robbery but not all that far off either in the eyes of the majority.

no, when the fight went the distance I knew it would be close the first time, and in the fight Spinks looked closer to Larry's size than I thought he would. I was expecting a guy a lot smaller, and if we see it he was not much smaller really. The second fight I thought maybe Holmes edged it, but he didn't get Spinks out of there, and those fast combinations got Michael points. Michael was a great fighter. So was Larry.. Who was greater is the question.. I would say altogether Michael, but some can say Larry was past it at this point. Regardless, it was a great accomlishment for Michael to go 15 rounds 2 times... But a robbery? Not going 15 rounds and how Michael's combinations looked.

I thought it was a robbery and Holmes clearly won it. I thought Spinks won the first one.

I remember at the time thinking Holmes was robbed but watching both fights again fairly recently they were a lot closer than I remembered. When they are close it's annoying if it's your fighter but it's not a robbery not when there a round or two either way.

I wasn't convinced Spinks had won the first one. It was such a tepid display from both men and not a convincing victory but, nonetheless, nothing particularly controversial.

The second saw a more tuned in, albeit still past-it Holmes in a less tepid display, do much better.

For me, that was a clear Holmes victory, even if you give Spinks the benefit of the doubt on a couple of the close rounds, and it could easily have been scored 145-140 in his favor.

I thought Holmes won the second one but robbery feels strong

Have not seen it since the night it aired, but at the time, as a kid, I remember scoring it on paper that night and my dad and I both thought Holmes won the rematch. By about 3 rds as I recall....
