I might misunderstand but Thomas was unbeaten from 78-85. Good early win vs Tillis, good draw vs Coetzee and back to back wins over witherspoon and Weaver.

I do think i misunderstand your point tho Bill

Fair question ... here's your answer ... his pre-Tillis fights were against next to no one. Tillis was a fringe contender at best and no big deal in any way either. Drawing with a Coetzee who lost almost ever major career bout is no crowning achievement. He did fight a nice fight against Witherspoon but Tim was always an under achiever ... then he blew it against Berbick ... what else is there to say except he had a nice hard jab and a very short prime ?

Well if you think he had a 24 hour prime you're even sillier than i am rapidly starting to think.

    Jesus H Christ

Beating Tillis had already been done when Thomas beat him in 1982, and a draw with Coetzee is good; not a win... Spoon fought / defended against Thomas like a wussy... Weaver had his moments against Thomas in '85...... Sorry, but Thomas' title win over Spoon was his peak night and only real fight that people remember him by today, aside from his wicked KO loss to Tyson in '87 and TKO loss to Holy in '88........... Thomas' prime was give or take 24 hours long....... WORD!

Personally i remember Tillis, Coetzee, Weaver and Spoon real well. Thomas beat Tillis before numerous other fighters but he was still a good scalp at that time. He beat a decent version.

Thousands of fighters have been beaten before others have notable wins over them. Shavers, Norton, Weaver, Berbick, spinks and others had been beaten before Holmes beat them. This doesn't mean some of them weren't notable wins or should be thrust aside to obscurity.

Hearns beaten before the Hagler fight, Duran beaten pre SRL, etc.

Thomas was just too good for Spoon on the night imo. Had some real answers.

Yes. For 24 hrs Thomas was da man....:hey

    MR.BILL:hat

I think Spoon overall proved the better fight in history--despite looking ugly once he lost to Golota and Page in 1998 and 1999..... Spoon finished ugly, where Thomas put together a dozen wins over bums and stiffs to close-out his show in the early 1990s.......

Thomas won 13 of his last 14 fights including winning the IBO world heavyweight title, decisoning the electrifying Craig Payne!!!!

I don't worry much about what fighters do at those stages of their career unless they bring out something crazy like Duran did. Both went on for eons too long like most boxers do.
