If we've learnt anything from the Vic/Mijares fight, it's not that Mijares isn't a world class operator, it's that you shouldn't be "cocky" and "confident" before a big fight. It backfired on Mijares, and many of his biggest fans here at ESB.
Mijares was the most overrated fighter on ESB(other than Linares),yes the guy had skills but he wasnt as good as people made him out to be,altoug i havent followed Mijares closely like some fighters here the only other fight of him that i saw other than the Darchinian fight was his fight with Munoz and i wasnt impressed but i tought that maybe he had an off night but Vic proved that he was way overrated. i even saw an article some time ago compring Mijares with Willie Pep for ****s sake.
the prob w/ your analogy is that you compare mijares w/ donaire. donaire has a lethal combo of power, speed and skills while mijares lacks significantly in the power dept. that's why darchinyan didn't even flinch when mijares connected w/ his best punches unlike donaire who almost KO'd him in the 2nd and eventually did so in the 5th. darchinyan will therefore respect donaire's punching power when they meet again. he won't try to walk through donaire's punches just like he did w/ mijares. that's the biggest difference between him fighting mijares and a rematch w/ donaire.
Had he been knocked out in the first round or by one punch, I might agree with you. However, he was completely dominated and then stopped. All it takes is one bad round for you to stop being cocky or arrogant. However, Mijares had 9 bad rounds. Mijares isn't a bum, but he's clearly not as good as people made him out to be.
I think many Mijares fans are more delusional that Pac fans. I'm guessing Boom Boom is also a Donaire fan. Many Mijares' fans have dogged Donaire; claiming Mijares is vastly superior to him and would wipe the floor with him. Well guess what? Donaire was outpointing Darchinyan before stopping him, and he completely dismantled Maldanaldo despite battling injuries and weight issues. Meanwhile, Mijares managed only a draw against Maldanado and got dominated and knocked the **** out against Darchinyan.
No worries mate. Good thing you called the fight. :good Actually, BR, I'd really like to see a rematch between the two to make sure the above is true. I believe a fighter can be justified if he has an off night (i.e. Paul Williams in the first Quintana bout). But if he failed to improve and adjust in a rematch, then you would be 100% correct and I would agree instantly.
Williams won 4 or 5 rounds and lost a decision on his off night. Mijares was dominated for 9 rounds and was knocked the **** out. He couldn't do anything right out there. That was more than just a bad night for him. Or maybe we should believe that Arce simply had a bad night against Mijares?
You mean to say Crisitian Mijares isn't a world class operator? The man went to Japan and got a decision. Just ask Juan Manuel Marquez how hard it is to get decision in the opponents hometown. Crisitan Mijares is still relatively young at 27, he has plenty of time to bounce back from the defeat Saturday night. Getting stopped by a fighter like Vic Darchinynan does not undo the brillant defensive and offensive work he showed in his fights with Kawashima, Navaro, Munoz, and Arce. My opinion is that he came into the Vic fight over confident and cocky, and knowing little about how to counter Vic's arkward style. To be dismissive about a fighter just because he lost a fight at the very highest level is ridiclious.
It would have been easier to believe Arce had an off night, if Mijares did not go on to unify 2 titles, and show his beautiful ability in the process. I am not simply saying Vic only won because Mijares had an off night, I'm just saying it's naive to dismiss Mijares world class ability because of a loss. I think I probably blame Floyd Mayweather Jr for today's fans believing a loss is the end of a career.
Aint that the truth. But I dont know whats up with ESB.. Actually I cant remember a fighter losing with this much excuses from ESbrs. Hamed for example losing to Barrera is one I can think off and even that doesnt come close to this. I mean ironically Vic never got defended one bit when he was dominted by Donaire and Vic was a name at the time and hyped in this very same forums. Like you said, I cant remember a so called "elite" in his prime get dominated like this ever I think. Last one was Davey Moore vs. Duran...but Duran is a legend. I can also say Manny Pac over Mab 1, but in hindsight we know that Manny Pac is a fighter of a generation as well. I remember when the Mijares/Donaire thing was rampant about a year ago. I swear I couldnt see anything with Mijares. I couldnt see anything dynamic, he wasnt fast, his defense was average, hes not explosive, he lacked power. Sure he had lenght and can stick his jab and move a bit. I think that people based everything on that one fight with Arce. It has to be only that because his other fights are negligible in a sense that he was facing very soft competition which any decent fighter can look good against.
He's not a top 10 fighter, that's for sure. Good for him. That doesn't prove much He actually fought a really good fighter. It doesn't undo it, but it does take some of the shine off of him. And I don't think his defense was brillians against Navaro and Munoz. To completely write off such a terrible loss is ridiculous. Mijares fans might need to reevaluate this guy. The only thing I said about the guy is that he isn't as good as advertised, I've hardly been dismissive.. Guys who receive all the praise he was getting don't get taken apart like that. If Mijares came in cocky, that **** should've ended after the first round.
