Much closer than the judges scored it.

    Holyfield by 5 rounds?

    Give me a break.

I had it a draw, just scoring it a few minutes ago.

Close fight. I had Holyfield by a couple points. He was pullin away though. Mercer gets KO'd in a 15 rounder.

Not a chance, unless Mercer had a rib broken again and had to retire on his stool.

Holyfield wasn't particularly active at the end of the tenth vs. Mercer.

    15? :patsch

I think I had Holyfield winning barely...but there was always a love affair/judge advantage with Holyfield.

I'm tellin ya man. Watch it again. At the end Mercers got nothin left. Holyfields comin on strong. I've watched this and the Lewis fight back to back many times. Mercer was great in both but came up short. Holyfields gash makes the fight look closer than it was. He was a bloody mess at the end.

Mercer had a cut too. What's it matter?

Mercer had a broken rib, hence why he stopped throwing from round 8 on.

It was a close but clear win for Holyfield, i think i had it either 6-4 or 7-3-1 in the bald man's favor. Funny thing is that the fight was arguably as close as Lewis-Mercer, but because the crowd went wild when Mercer missed a jab and watched in silence when Lewis landed a flush 3-punch combination, the latter is perceived closer whereas you rarely hear about Holyfield-Mercer.

I also think it was much closer than the official scoring, but I haven't seen the fight since it was shown originally so I won't say too much.

I think these efforts aginst Holyfield and Lewis epitomise Mercer the fighter. He fell short against the real elite of the division, but always made a fight of it. Against anyone else, he was a dangerous guy.

Same score as the Lewis-Mercer match. 6-4 (Holy).

I don't have my round-by-round scoring handy, but I had it 96-93 Holyfield.
    6-4 plus the KD.

8th round was the turning point. Mercer was winning it, Holy was bleeding and looked tired, and there was only about 25 seconds to go. Then Holy caught him with that short left hook, Mercer had to take a knee, and a 10-9 became a 8-10 round and Holy had momentum back.

Mercer was distraught afterwards. He's still bitter about it, but even more so about the Lewis loss. I think the fact that was after the Holy loss adds to that.

On the flipside, he got a gift draw against Marion Wilson in the fight before Holyfield and what was considered a fairly arguable one against Witherspoon in the fight after Lewis so...swings and roundabouts, Ray.

I remember I scored it for Holyfield, but it was quite close - I agree without knockdown it could go easily to Mercer.

I don't remember Mercer getting cut too. Must not have been that bad. Cuts definitely DO matter.
The tape I have has no sound. Maybe this is skewing my perception a bit. The Lewis one too. I can only imagine the commentary about the cut. I could SEE that his shorts were almost covered in red. But watching the body language from the 2 fighters is cool too. I watched how at the end of each round Mercer held his hands high to the crowd. Even if it wasn't a particularly good one for him. He was pumped for this fight! I saw Evander hit Mercer while he was on one knee. Ron Lipton then pushing him off.
The body language between Mercer and Holyfield at the end suggested to me that Mercer was running low and Holyfield was comming on.
I didn't realize that Mercer got a rib broken. This was a great fight! They were both hungry. Mercer's robe said "The Real Warrior". Wow talk about a statement!
Was there good commentary that I missed? Crowd reactions? Stats? Anything else I'd be happy to listen to :thumbsup . It'd be sweet to have a copy with sound.

Yeah, this is why I like to watch both of these back to back. Seems a lot of people say Mercer was shorted vs. Lewis. My take with no sound? They were BOTH close fights. The body language suggested to me that Mercer was "definitely" getting to Lewis. Lewis still won.

I've always felt that if this fight was a 12 rounder Mercer would have been TKO'd.

Mercer towards the end began to retreat diplomatically not pressing the action despite being in a very close fight. His reluctance IMHO stems from the fact that he was hurt and he knew that if he pressed forward, he walk into something that could spell the end of the nite.

I had Holyfield winning the fight after he turned things around in the 8th.

Aye, but Holy scored a knock down hurt Ray Mercer with a hard left hook.

So more like a 3 point win for Holyfield.
