I've just re-watched a lot of Holyfield fights and I've come to a conclusion; he was a cruiser who found a way to win among a division of much larger men, but shouldn't be compared to the best. He beat a faded great in Tyson and scratched his way to respectability against Lewis. When it comes to the modern heavyweights he's still considered among the best but maybe that's just a means to over-glorify Bowe. If you disregard size he wasn't that great.
Holy beat Bowe, Tyson, Moorer, Mercer, Foreman, Holmes, Qawi. Douglas, Dokes, Ruiz, Rahmen, and a whole bunch of other guys. He was not overrated in any way shape or form. As for Tyson being past his best- Holy himself had suffered a heart attack by this time, so no, no excuses please.
As a relatively light heavyweight he made the best of what he had but I don't feel his record was amazing. As a fighter who competed among genuine heavies despite his size he was impressive.
Steroids like the other guy said. Heart attack at a young age you know what time it is. Also got caught cheating. There were rumours that when he moved up to HW he was on PEDS, just look at how much muscle mass he put on in a short space of time.
He was well beaten by Lewis over the course of two bouts. He clung on by spoiling, a big shiny head and a solid chin.
****ing idiot. Ban this **** by virtue of him even hinting Holy was overrated. Bet next he'll be saying Tyson couldn't punch. Ban the ****.
They're all good wins but Holmes and Foreman were too old, Moorer was never that good, Douglas is only notable because of an evening at the Tokyo-dome and Ruiz? Consistent is not great.
I think the guy has some decent points, myself. I wouldn't say Holyfield is wildly overrated, but he is somewhat overrated. I think he's a top 20 heavyweight, but not top 10.
